New BETA sent out
the layout has been condensed and a code tidy up I have had word back from TGC saying that a fully loaded FPE does not impact GG performance and that the FPE's only load once

Thank you its been quite a roller coaster just doing the FPE Creator, quite a learning curve, I have just sent out what I think is the latest beta as long as the testers are ok with it I may post a preview version for everyone to try

if anyone wants to beta test just send me a PM I have 3 users testing for me at the moment

This latest beta fixes the help system, it was a corrupt dll (Microsoft Help Workshop is the compiler I used and it is ancient lol) causing me a headache its took me two days to pin it down (I will probably invest in a decent 'HATS' system if anyone has any suggestions)

good news is I found it and all is fixed so context help also works now, if you press F1 when on a text field or dropdown a help window will pop up, the help file was created with as much information as I could find or knew there are two items that I am not sure about and keep getting conflicting information these are 'Occluder' and 'Occludee' I may send an email to Lee to get official word on them.

Made some progress on the Library tool I am having a problem with some files, I cannot work out why the folder > folder comparison is slightly out, I have spent all day trying to find missing files but for the life of me I cannot find which files are missing, it is a strange one

anyhow I now have a 'cloning' system in place the first 'clone' takes about 6 mins to do 48Gb (this is SSD to SSD) eventually the clone process will only copy newer or non existent files or folders so should take only seconds to update (once how I figure it out that is io.stream is very new to me lol)

here is a video of the cloning process (I paused for a bit its like watching paint dry LOL) once the clone is finished I will move onto indexing/searching

Usually when you get the entitybank showing wrong, ie wrong icon for a model, it means another model in that folder is either missing a .bmp icon or the .bmp icon is named wrong, could that be yhe same issue you have?

Morning Belidos

Thank you but no that is not my issue, if you look at the screenshot of the side by side comparison the file and folder count is identical the size is also identical, the problem is the 'size on disk' the 'bytes' mismatch' I am wondering if my disks are formatted different and that the folders are identical, it is strange.

I will clone a different directory and see if I get a similar result

Cluster size, Fragmentation etc will effect size on disc if fact you can create completely identical directories on the same drive and they will likely take up different amounts. it is totally normal not at all strange.

You may also have hidden .thumbs in one copy that aren't in the other because windows generates these temporarily as and when you view the images.

Hi Ratall yeah the first thing I looked at the only difference between the logical drives is that C: is a striped volume so I am guessing even though there is no parity the system must keep details (boot record) of where the data is stripped, drive F: is not stripped. so C: must use 2 x 4Kb cluster size and F: just 1 x 4Kb, but I think I am clutching at straws here

Quote: "You may also have hidden .thumbs in one copy that aren't in the other because windows generates these temporarily as and when you view the images."

Hi Belidos yeah another thing I first checked for but no .thumbs.db in there either

Quote: "Morning all ,this might give you a idea Kev"

H Granada this is quite interesting and may have something to do with it, even though I am not using C# I am using VB.NET 2019 and the io.stream is new to me I may have written the bytes wrong I have gone through each folder and there is a couple with 'size on disk' differences but the size are identical.

I think I may release this to the Beta testers and see if they have differences just to rule out my raid setup

thank you all for your replies I really appreciate the help

I would suggest you not worry about size on disc as long as the size and the number of files is the same the directories are the same at that level.

If you want to be even more certain calculate a CRC or hash for all the files in the directory and compare that.
When I was playing round with a similar idea I checked for changes in files by calculating the CRC of each file and its size, storing them.
To check for changes I checked the files sizes and ran the crc calc again. Checking against the previous results this is quicker than comparing files as you only need to read one copy of the file to do the comparison and also if the lengths are different you instantlly know they are different with out bother to read the file. As you need to store the filenames with their details you can also detect new and deleted files.
In theory there it is almost impossible that 2 different files have the same crc(64 bit or greater for large files) and literally impossible for them to also have the same length. (I need to recheck the maths on that if I get time as I am working from memory with this last statement)

Additional Note:

Stripped/raid volumes need to store addition info for syntonisation and recovery purposes this could effect size on disc.
SSDs do not store the data the way they say all this stuff about clusters is for compatibility purposes. What they actually do internally is completely different and varies by type ,make technology etc.
So size on disc is nothing to do with the data just the amount of physical storage.
“Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.”

Thank you Ratall I am not concerned about it, I have done numerous checks and the data is identical, I was just curious of the difference.
I have sent a version out for testing I will see what feedback I get from that, I will continue with the work for now

Everything seems to be doing what it should do for me, no crashes, norton absolutely hates it, and windows has to be told to shut up and run it, but that's expected behaviour for an app being developed.

if anyone is following, I have managed to index the legacy fpe files so the library is beginning to be quite useful, once the Tags are used it will be quite good I think (well I am chuffed anyway lol)

no beta yet sorry

yeah, that will be the curse of certificates. M$ decided long ago that you have to pay some third-party to give you a certificate to run your program on someone else's PC. I always consider that an opportunity to tell Windows who is boss.

@GraPhix, don't really need this myself, but great work there m8

New beta 1.1 sent out, this is with the search library function whilst metadata is not in those files I made sure 'legacy' fpe file contents and filenames are included in the search, once the metadata is in the fpe files a more stricter search can be used.

Thank you

I have made more progress today and I think I am getting there, unfortunately my search indexing is possibly a little too sensitive
not sure how I will get around this, I have done this so that 'Legacy' fpe's can be searched once metadata is widely used I suppose I could limit the search just to the metadata

Thank you Mr Wolf

Latest Beta sent out, this will be the last Beta I send until I receive my code signing certificate.

Quite a few updates in this one:

FPE Help file updated to reflect the official word on Occluder and Occludee from TGC
New splash screen on start up
the library tools have been refined and compacted
clone folder now fully implemented (can clone any folder not just GG entitybank)
new search window single click will give a preview of the asset double click will open the FPE file
new project creator click on file - create project list then right click on the assets in the search window and choose add to project
you can save the list, print preview, print and also clear the list

please be aware I have not added a check to the list for duplications yet so be careful you don't add the same thing twice this will be fixed in the next update.

I have not had any error reports or issues sent to me so I assume everything as been working as should for you guys

I have my Code Signing Certificate so here is a Preview of Asset Manager for all to try, I have locked it to 5 days so I will remove this link after 5 days, there is only a help file with FPE Creator atm I am still working on the others, you can find a lot of information in this thread but if you get stuck just post here or send me a PM.

Please let me know if you have any problems at all, it has been tested by a few helpful community members but things do get missed.

no installer yet just extract to a folder of your choice and run from there, it is now 32bit and 64bit so will work on windows 7 PC's but you might have to download the latest version of .NET

If you do download this and try it can you just let me know? thank you

Hey Kev
Great man.. Love the FPE editor.

Few suggestions....
1. I would remove the Verticle scrollbar in the Main Window, and make all windows to fit the Main Window Frame
2. I still work in 1366 x768 resolution size, and when manual resize the asset library window my verticle scrollbar disappear and not
all info display. (see attached ss)
3. The search window popup right aligned, which make the list with results (when resize the window) disappear on the right side
and you manually have to move the window (see attached screenshot). May center the window if possible.
4. Scrollbar on search to indicate activity...

Personally, when I design, I center all my windows, but if the user move / resize the window I store that x/y values in a INI file, and next time on load, I use that values to display the window.
I never use a verticle scrollbar on the Main Frame as default, and try all windows to fit inside the main frame.
If the user want to drag/resize the window bigger than the frame, the I show the scrollbar.
But this is a personal taste.

Great Job Man, keep it going....

Hi DannyD
thank you, yes the app is designed to work at a 1920x1080 resolution I also hate scroll bars , I will look at reducing the resolution but most screens nowadays run at 1920x1080, it was one of my concerns at what the minimum res should be, the real estate could be optimised more.

I will see what I can come up with but 1366x768 is quite small is that a 14" laptop screen by any chance ?

Thank you,

I have resized the library window, thank you for the feedback DannyD I have also set the search window to anchor to centerscreen,
the search screen is actually 'Floating' this means you can ninimise the main Asset Manager window and still have the search window open, I have set it like this because I run GG and have the search window at the side of it allows me to search for entities, the idea was to have the search in GG but my skills are no where near being able to achieve that

if anyone else finds something that could be improved in asset manager please let me know, I am working on the latest documentation then moving on to the next tool

Hi GraPhiX
Thanks for the update.
Yeah its a 15" Laptop
Dunno what you use to design, But I use Clarion Developer, and doesn't really matter in what size I design, when I click maximize it will automatically resize according to that screen, and all other listboxes, views etc, if the ancors are set correctly in the Software.
Thanks any, will check now

Thanks, works great...
Suggestion:
Seeing that you have the FPE creator, with all the nice dropdowns, lists, etc to create a fpe file, why not make it a Editor as well.
IF you click on a Fpe file in the list, instead of open with an external Editor, use your build-in Editor to do the changes. and save.
