Quote: "It's worth mentioning the new '_surface' texture format can actually handle 4 channels: R = AO, B = roughness, B = metalness, A = reflectance. Don't think I've ever made a reflectance map before, not sure how to works in conjunction with metalness and roughness to produce the final reflectivity of the surface. "

This is true, the alpha channel can control the Fresnel Reflectance, which is how reflective the surface is at grazing angles. These are very small values for most non-metallic surfaces, usually in the 0-0.1 range, so a fairly dark color value.

Wicked Engine gives more control over this value than some other graphics engines in this regard, where often times this value is hard-coded based on whether the surface is metallic or not (dialectric). So this is a very nice feature that can produce a wide range of surface effects.

You may not get the Changing Rooms reference
If Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen had paint and a musty Cellar, it's just the sort of look he might do! I was going for pretty much the opposite of dark and spooky
I've got a more up to date version in the works, just for fun.

SOLO DESIGN when you said you got massage file not found..
I thought oh I'll try that.. so I renamed the cellardemomay folder to cellardemomay-1
so that GGMax could not find it...
and low and behold...when run I get..

The window is filled with black...
NOTE: This is an aplpha build only - not final software ... etc.. ( across top of screen )
the GameGuru Max graphic is swaying in the top left corner
with the 170-200 FPS in full screen
with 280-310 FPS when windowed.

Task Manager :
GPU 3D 75%
Dedicated GPU memory usage 0.6/2.0 GB

maybe a simpler demo will run... ?

Re texturing seems easy enough in Quixel Mixer. Brought the .obj file into mixer and redid the textures with the channels mapped properly.

OK run it again, this time it was running at between 140fps and 160fps, that's a bit more realistic, seems like if you lose focus on the window the FPS goes through the roof.

@Belidos. I've found it runs faster in minimised mode. You can also make it zippier by resizing the screen to a postage stamp size Theoretically we should see even faster speeds with full screen But I hope they leave the window mode functional, it's nice to have the oprion
Edit - not totally minimised Just a smaller window.

60 FPS with GG

60 FPS with GGMax

Textures on GG doesn't work, as expected.

Note: I did those videos just for sake of testing, I must admit also out of curiosity.

Yes, I agree. Nothing special about the models itself, just textures doing fine their work.
I guess those cso shaders has something to do with showcase video atmosphere.
It takes me a long time to covert all the stuff.

ha how odd, after issues with new GFX card (GEFORCE GTX 1060) due to no power supply 8 pin connector with card, I reverted back to my Geforce GT710 card and ran the alpha2 demo without the driver installed (as I uninstalled it prior to installing new card). Demo now works but is slow, started at 62 fps and went right down to 2-4 fps, which I was expecting. so have issue with the driver and/or resolution.
got a bit of investigating to do. Screen display is obviously the lowest res currently.

[edit-doesn't run at all with driver installed. oh well never mind ha]

Probably checks your video card version. Not installing the Nvidia drivers may confuse it and so let it run. Just a way to stop less than min spec cards running I imagine. If they didn't they would still get people moan about speed while running below spec graphics cards

There may be a way round it if you really want to run Max on lower spec cards. Omega drivers may be one way possibly. If they are still about

@3com Was wondering if anyone would do a GG version I actually think many of the models in this demo are from GG already just with a lick of texture paint Things like boxes and crates, tables and shelves don't really need high polys but a good texture always makes a diff.

I've also notice a sky and simple floor outside the cellar is visible, or at least at the very start. So the demo is not optimised for just being in that room Maybe we will see outside later on!

@ DVader
Eh, nice pic there.
Models in the demo are done exclusively for the indoor scene, so they don't need to have 2 sides, and since their fpe files don't set anything to force GG to render 2 sides, then sometimes you can see the outdoors, just add cullmode = 1 to the respective fpe file. I myself convert and edit those models into 3ds max and I have to shell all the walls faces to get 2 sides, re-assing all the new texture paths to the X Files, and rendering all them, before exporting as X files.
Or you have to check if normals are inverted.

Sure having some fun remixing the demo!

I think my Rick and Morty find the characters one works better when running rather than the vid. I did my best to get it high res! That one was done entirely in Gimp

Gimp 2.10 is really nice, anyway, I don't get Gmic working with. It looks like some bug in Gimp or Gmic, doesn't look like compatible ones.

I used Gimp to edit the textures in that one. The New Hulk V Thing demo includes actual geometry additions, rather than simple texture edits.

I spent hours editing the textures for the Rick and Morty Edit. This one was pretty fast and took about an hour or so (most of that tweaking stuff to a silly extent)

Max has the potential to be pretty awesome.

Edit - Oh and I notice no-one saw the added water on the floor lol. Perhaps I should have made it more noticeable? Give me a min

If you pull the scene into the wicked editor you can do anything with it
Afterwards, save and move over (together with any new model and their textures) into the folder in max

@Avenging Eagle : Yes, your old PBR texture sets will be automatically be loaded 'into' the surface format the new graphics engine uses, so no need to convert anything if you don't want to. For new assets you only intend for use in MAX, then creating _surface textures makes sense as its a cleaner file set for your entities, and of course will load faster

@SOLO DESIGN : Your system looks fine. We will need to add some logging for the next alpha build so we can track issues like this, well ahead of the first beta build. Thanks for the feedback and specs!

@OldFlak : You will be able to dial down many settings to get the FPS you need, the alpha build 2 has MSAA set to 8 which is pretty high, and I have not activated any performance tricks in this demo either. Good to know it runs for you!

@osiem80 : No plans to add any new features to the release, we want to focus on the new terrain and graphics engine as the priorities. Once both of those items are solid and the community are happy, we can think about other things.

Great to see all the mods, awesome creativity from you all as usual! Hopefully I can also contribute next week with another Sneak Peek, perhaps featuring a new addition to the cellar scene This week I am back in the basement getting the boring back-end stuff progressed, so hopefully you can tune in on Wednesday for my live broadcast (4PM BST) and I can cover what I have been up to.

@Lee : can I suggest that your testing levels include animated entities, active physics entities, entities being moved and rotated via direct script control (and not just Y rotation) plus some see through and reflective ones.

If you do that you should hopefully catch any weird visual anomalies early in the process.

Also when you think you have Bullet engine integrated throw the Fork Lift truck Demo at it, that will test that the physics is all working at least as well as it did prior to the 64 bit changes.
Been there, done that, got all the T-Shirts!
