For those that do use 3ds Max, there is a maxscript that can convert FBX Boned character to a biped rigged character.

I have used it and it does work. The final Bibed result might need some rotation tweeks but it works.
This of course would only apply to a character you have created that has an FBX Bone rig.
If you are creating a character from scratch then you can start with a biped rig and this is not needed.
As I said above this is only for 3ds Max
