I really not keen on all these enable this that and the other in settings. Some things should just be available by default.

No quite sure why there would be an option for a basic functionality like this. Never seen this in most software I use (not just game engines).
Sure is a strange design decision. This is why I stopped using MAX and waiting 1 year to look into it before investing time and money.
What's the purpose of having this as an option?

If you don't find something, look in settings, most likely you will find some related tickbox.
Settings are atm the temporary box to place that sort of things, anyway, I'm sure everything will take their logical spot when the time comes.

When you do that before the update, there was nothing to save. I made the game for a week, accidentally pressed NO and lost everything. This feature is a nightmare.

Not quite sure what you mean but everything in your GameGuruApps is backed up in that folder ?
You should not have lost anything.

To be honest, I started a map and updated the software and it just vanished.

Yes but probably backed up like this ...
Provided you used the GameGuruApps folder and not the core.

OK, I haven't updated to a newer build for a while. With the 1-21-22 build... I'm lost. On the story board screen I click "Click Here to create a new level"

I'm now on the screen where I can select my terrain. I have no idea where/what to do next... I do not see a button to start adding entities etc...

I click the < back button and it says my terrain is not saved. I don't see a button to save it.

Scroll down to the bottom for Save Terrain Settings

After you click the "Click Here to create a new level" you then have to select one of the bioms at the upper-right or an "empty" (also at the upper-right). Then you need to go down and make any adjustments you like (see synchromesh's screenshot above), if any at all. The final button you need to press is "Generate Terrain for Level". This will FINALLY take you to the area where you can FINALLY begin to start making your level for your game.

It's a confusing way to do things if you've not had to do it before. I really think they need to rethink this and had opened a GitHub request stating they need to rethink this. New users are going to be just like you. They're going to click that first Click Here screen and then promptly get lost because absolutely nothing else tells them what to click and the one thing that tells them to save (Save Terrain Settings) isn't going to do the trick at the start for them, either.

Thanks synchromesh. Clicking "Generate Terrain for Level" was not very clear to me letting me know that's what needed to be clicked. But after knowing that it needs clicked, it's not a big deal.

If the button looked a little different or had the > ... the arrow graphic for next would be helpful.

No worries

I'm still trying to figure out how to update GameGuruMAX. Every time I open it up, I don't get an update. It just goes to where you can play a demo level, add to the demo level or start a new game with not all the features working.
Can someone point out to me how to update this game engine?

If you can find the 'Help' button up top- I think after you start to edit a level. Right now my version is locked up altogether so can't get anywhere. (Blessing in disguise?!)
Yeah, there are problems, and we need the developers to look at the UI integration and work-flow very closely alongside people that expect to use the software efficiently without all the hurdles. GGClassic beats MAX hands down @ start.

BTW, the newest updates usually arrive late Friday or Saturday (I hear).

to update GG max, you need to run the "GameGuru MAX Updater.exe" app in the root folder OR from inside GG max go to help->check for updates.
