This very very early WIP, but can modify any height value (not added any smoothing process yet) on the current available map.
Not getting too carried away but having a lot of fun. Showing seams are due to LOD but are not there when camera range is closer in.
Will try an actual HM image at some point now I have all the metadata I need.

The seams issue always happens in GGMax terrain atm.
Nice one BOTR!

Thanks both.
Image editing will be possible e.g radius settings plus other e.g. maybe other brush shapes to make it more interesting , will probably have to recalculate the normals data and will add in smoothing, and random maze generation. Plus tons of other stuff, mesh generation maybe. Not sure exact plan yet. Want to see how the max terrain develops.

time to load up VS2019 and get some code in c+ and see what else can be done.

separate islands look good, I'm going to tell you what I see when I look at your island pics, I see my facilities placed there with an underwater system to connect them.

@3com- sounds like a good idea. Can't wait to see what happens with the terrain next so I can expand on this .

Max terrains are defo not ready at all at the sec, visible seams and massive slowdown abound when editing them I've given them a good thrashing and found them to be very memory intensive. One level, albeit fairly full, mostly consisting of 4 or 5 trees and a few rocks included by default, takes up almost 3 gig! Something is not right there; a map with many more unique objects loaded in, but with a flat untouched terrain, is only about 7.6 MB. That's a bit of a difference!

Edit- Oh I get a consistent 60 fps on a flat map with many unique objects, but scrape 30 or so at best with the terrain based one, with lows of 20 in places. Seems Max is fairly well optimised as long as the terrain/water is not visible. I'm hoping for a bit of a boost with this weeks update. Probably not massive, but I am hoping to be proved wrong
SPECS: Ryzen 1700 CPU. Nvidia 970GTX. 16 Gig Memory. Win 10.

yes, terrain needs tons of work by the looks of it. Not sure if terrain will be part of the update this week according to my splash screen, but apparently that can change.

I remember hearing terrain basically isn't implemented yet. What's in now is just height setting, there's no terrain functionality really built into Max yet. GG Classic works great, if GG Max has that terrain system at a higher polygon res I can't see why that'd be bad, nor why more would be needed. It'd be perfect.
