Yes, they are similar, I have videos for the Mixamo chars under third party section which involves renaming the bones. The initial decision users need to make are:
0. What are the tools I need to do the job perfectly? a lot of 3rd party progams are not great when e.g. exporting to directX format
-these days I find that the FBX2GG just bombs out when trying to import anims, it's easier for me to use 3dS max and export to directX if I want to use the original model anims.
0a. what format do I want to export to e.g. directX, FBX, OBJ etc.
1. Are there any meshes/bones that need removing e.g. a weapon
2. Am I using the animations from the original model or using GameGuru anims or e.g. Mixamo or another package animations
2a. using a program like mender tends to correct any .X files and imports into GG classic no problem otherwise sometimes you can get disfiguration. I can upload if need be as it was always free. and/or if you have it or can get a copy get microsoft directx meshview.exe (or mview.exe). I can also upload if need be.
3. Fragmotion is a good tool for manipulation e.g. deleting bones from the hierarchy e.g. weapon, also adding the required FIRESPOT bone and setting the correct rotations for it. it is also a good idea to zero the bone rotations. In FM, you can also append animations.
FM does not import FBX at all, you will always get an error. The DBO export is not always great either.
I will add any thing else I can think of here and do a general process video when I get the chance. I have a 2 year old that needs a lot of focus at the moment.
If you want to use the Mixamo auto-rigger, this is a really good way of taking an OBJ or FBX char and getting it rigged and then downloading animations and adding them to the auto rigged character.
It all depends on what you are trying to achieve.
