Is there a way to see a selectable list of all entities in a level? If not, can this please be a feature

Not to my knowledge, and would be a nice feature.

You can coerce another feature to list all entity types used in a level:

Without GG running, temporarily rename the 'entitybank' folder to say 'entitybank2' .
Load GG, then load the level map (it won't fully load, you will get a message on the screen about missing entities).
In the mapbank folder there will be a '.log' file that will list all the "missing" media, the file will be the name of the level with suffix .log
Now rename entitybank2 back to entitybank or none of your levels or maps will work of course

It won't list all instances, just all types of entities needed for the level. May not help completely for what you want but thought I'd post the tip.

Cheers.

@ archkali
Attach the script to a dynamic entity, for example a barrel, test the level, get close to the barrel, close the level.
In the "Files" folder look for the file called: "itemPath.txt", here you will find all the items listed, including all the paths of the objects in your level.
I remember writing a script that also includes the ids of each item, if you need them then let me know and I will look for it.

I guess what I am asking for is something like Unity's Scene Inspector - so that we can see linking / parent-child hierararchies, and just a better organization of the Entities frame overall. its crazy to have to just scroll down and hope to find things, especially as levels become more populous with stuff.

I appreciate your kind and helpful answers. But yeah, this is bugging me. I like Game Guru - I like the people who make it, and I like the community. Let's just be clear on that. But if this is truly meant to be Game Design for Everyone, the very first thing should be UX. The fact that I am first going to be asked to buy content packs means that the curation and organization of that content should be paramount.

The assets window is a travesty that looks like it stowed away from Windows 95. Why is there no Searchline? Why is there no way to organize by type? Why is there no way to alphabetize folders? And yes, why can I not see all of the entities in my scene in a single window where I can select them from there?

To make this a viable product, this is essential imho. Devs? Are you reading this?

This is such a copout thing to say.

I have bought over $120 worth of user made content this week alone in support of the community. So please don't take that approach with me. I am a new user to this ecosystem (I used to fiddle around with DarkBasic 15 years ago) and am offering what I feel is important feedback.

If that is how you address people investing time and money into the platform then expect them to bounce right off.

I dont think it's a copout statement it's a factual statement. Maybe I'm missing the point. Happy xmas to all.

I am not gonna make a bigger deal about it. It is a condescending statement. Obviously I can figure out what I need to do with my money - I dont need a forum mod to tell me that no one is telling to buy anything. Well except for the fact that the DLCs are the main point of news and upfront and center on Steam's sale. So lets not be disingenuous.

Also "not sure what youre on about" continues this trend to be dismissive.

Look, my point is, that the UI is not commensurate with the fact that the platform makes important revenue from the sale of these DLCs, but the interface to manage such content seems to be unattended.

Making an experience in this game is unncessarily convoluted - with only one script per instance, no null objects to speak of that can be organized from a higher level etc.

I can take it, but look, my second point is that a new user should not be treated like a noob to some cabal. Be understanding, welcoming and respectful and maybe it will be good thing $. etc

I think your making a big deal out of nothing ..
You said the first thing you would be asked is to buy content packs ..
I simply said No one asks you to buy any content … That's totally up to you.

Shall we just leave it there ..

"You are making someone melt ."

Wow. Really? I was ready to let it go and then someone with 16 years on these boards - I presume you are one of the key devs? comes in with a snowflake jab, talking over my head at your "buddies."

You guys are something else. You know, just because someone levels a critique at your half-built platform doesn't make them ignorant. It is mind boggling that the veterans of this community are such patronizing and smug jerks. Too bad. I was investing in this thing you are building. I guess you reap what you sow.

Have you ever stopped and looked at the way you act?

Because right now the only person being a "jerk" right now is you.

You are displaying classic signs of triggering; over reacting to simple comments, over emotional displays of emotion, and abuse of others.

Nobody has said anything in this thread that is aimed at belittling you in any way, the first was a simple clarification of a statement that you made, and the other wad a light hearted dig at the person you were upset with, and even after your unfounded abuse they have not retaliated.

Its your attitude and yours alone that has turned this thread in a bad direction, you need to take responsibility for your words.

You need to calm down.
This is a great community and everyone is welcome.
Nothing that has been posted warrants your reaction which right now is coming across quite aggressively.

You will find everyone here will help you with whatever project you take on including assets. scripts and any problems you will have in GameGuru but no one will respond to your requests for help if they think correcting you will cause such a drama.

Belidos and Lances comments was clearly a joke and yes we also have some great fun here.
We are not your typical forum and we respect each others work and efforts for the community.
We hope all new members will become part of that.

I always get such a kick
out of new ones coming in to the forums and not bothering to search to see if what they are asking about hasn't been mentioned a dozen times or more before.
Then , after having spent most likely , less than $10 on a game making engine they go on about all the things it's missing....in their humble opinion.
I can just imagine them going and buying a cheap used car and then asking why it doesn't have all the gadgetry of a more expensive model.

Anyways..we all having some fun still.

Edit: 12/27/2019
Every map file saved to the map bank folder also contains a "Dat" file which is a list of every entity used in the map.
Just left mouse click the "dat" file and read/print it. I'm not sure if this is what you are asking for, but the entities are there as a list plus other information which includes the entity folder/sub folders and where each entity in the map will be found.

Good luck... PS welcome aboard.

No Im not gone.

Thank you @m2Design for your helpful reply and kind (and patient) welcome. I am discussing, however a version that is active in the project so that items can be selected live while designing a scene, and moreover display their hierarchy etc.

Such a window would include basic taxonomy/label/sort by type.

@UNIRD12B - Unity and Unreal are free unless you are doing over 100K in sales, etc And again, saying that someone is expecting "whistles and bells" for a $10 game engine is a copout. I am sure the developers feel this is more than just a "$10 game engine." Not asking for real time ray tracing here, just a way to actively identify objects in a scene.

Also, rather than attempt to ridicule me, why don't you link to the thread on this forum that discussed a scene inspector/hierarchy?

I honestly do not understand why users of this forum can create this type of thread in this section of the forum, having another section called "Feature request" created specifically for this purpose.

@ archkali
You have established a need for Gameguru that although discussed on many other occasions, remains a valid request.

Maybe you forgot to specify well what you were looking for in your main post; This would have prevented me from spending some time that I don't have in creating / testing a script that I thought was the solution to your problem.

Maybe you forgot to make your years of experience and your knowledge of respect very clear, this would have prevented misunderstandings, nobody is obliged to presuppose anything.

Welcome to the forum.

At the end of the day once its been established we do not have the exact feature that the OP requested then really the next step is to request it on GitHub.
https://github.com/TheGameCreators/GameGuruRepo
I can move the thread to feature Creep but GitHub kind of replaced that.

@3com - why is everyone here so hostile? Seriously. Again, no one has linked to a thread about this request. I obviously looked for it first and didnt find it. My replies were about the fact that my simple request was eventually met with sarcasm etc. I acknowledge that my opening message could have been more explicit and I appreciate your effort. However, if you "dont have the time" then dont bother, let someone else address it.

And this: "Maybe you forgot to make your years of experience and your knowledge of respect very clear, this would have prevented misunderstandings, nobody is obliged to presuppose anything." cmon man.

@synchromesh - feel free to move it to the git or however works for your system. I, like 3com, dont really have the bandwidth to completely understand what deprecated nomenclature you use for "feature creep" or whatever a new user to the community might not know.

I honestly was trying to offer some constructive criticism. I really did spend money on all the DLCs and also in good faith on packages by Hockey, Wolf, corrosion and teabone. Sadly it didnt work out and I just dont feel like hanging out in this group. So Im gonna move back to Unreal. I will pop in every so often, so please dont talk over my head or make attacks. Not for my sake but because it doesnt reflect well on the community.

Anyway, take it or leave it. Good luck.
