When trying to open the level, the screen goes black and a message says "can't find fpm file :\files\mapbank\(name of file).fpm
I was saving it when the engine had a runtime error and restarted. When I check the mapbank folder, it now shows .bak and .dat variants of the same file, which I don't recall being there before. Anyone got ideas?

Rename the .Bak file to .fpm and try loading that ..
Make a copy first .. It is a Backup file but only usually backs up the first save.

Well it worked...kinda. It's a really old version of the map, back to when I only had a couple props placed. Is there any other known option?

I don't know much lua, but the .dat file seems to have a bunch of entities from the most recent version of my map written on it, unlike the .bak file.

yes , the .dat stores various information such as the .DBO, .FPE, .DDS and other entity related info, it's really the map.ele/map.ent files that are important as they have a complete entity list and associated information. I recommend backing up .fpms and maybe the testlevel.fpm in levelbank on a regular basis, but that's up to you.

Its not just backup for any GG issues that might pop up. For me Windows 10 can be unpredictable with auto updates that suddenly restart and update whislt your in the middle of something

totally understand, but then users can turn off automatic windows updates in settings (via gpedit.msc and disable "configure automatic updates" policy) .

I did so via services.msc after some crash cause for one windows update, restore system, prob fixed, till the next time microsoft download again the same update causing issues with start menu, and with files association. Now I sleep pretty quiet.

It's best when really busy and actually inspired to create
a map to save constantly-- as mentioned. Every 5 minutes
sounds paranoid. But what's worse? Paranoia or frustration
over lost inspired work? Anyhow I also rename my map (save as)
several times (maybe after 1/2 hour of work so that in a weeks
time I might have 20+ maps of the same (progressing) level saved.

My Wife lost a letter she had spent hours on last week in MS Word .. Just wouldn't load back in and said it was corrupted and no she did not save it other than the once … I would have made a good few saves of that whilst progressing so its just a good thing to do no matter what your using.
