Hi all,

In FPSCx9 we could have a custom main menu with a video as background playing as loop. Is this possible in Game Guru?

I would like it so i can once again replicate game main menu themes similar to this:

The short answer is no, sadly. I want this feature too. In fact the whole way Game Guru handles video needs a bit of an overhaul, and we could do with video textures too.

I wrote a little program to do this in Dark Basic years ago. Game Guru has completely changed since and so it isn't really suitable anymore

Game Guru could do with this though, Dark Basic Pro could do it easily and that is what, 20 years old now? AGK supports it as well, so why this isn't in GG I couldn't say.

I like too.
GG has a very limit way to handle video, you can not set video res, and video texture shader are out of date since dx11.

Agreed, the whole of video playback, either as a title screen or in-game should be looked at, as most engines and games allow this.

yes I could also do this in other languages. I had started to look into this a while back, maybe if I get a moment, I'll have a look at the GG source code. can't be that hard.

Looks like I did post to github a year ago:

https://github.com/TheGameCreators/GameGuruRepo/issues/62

Hopefully something like this is possible. Basically allowing for sprites and maybe even images to be overlayed on top of a looped video. In FPSC it allowed for text to be on top and PNG images.

Pretty sure the opening menu for "Last of Us" is a small scene and not a video, think about it, the length of the random breeze movement on those curtains. it would take a lot more in file size as video than locking the camera and simply letting the scene run. 'Press any key to start' would be the simplest thing to set up even in GameGuru for a menu like this.
You could use looped animations on characters and entity's, realtime wind effects on vegetation and trees etc and script your button and HUD overlays while the scene runs in the background instead of a static full screen image or a bloated video file.

I did show off an intro years ago for my LEM demo level that worked along similar lines, basically just a fly over of the game area. Also did a similar one for the original Big Escape level.

Wasn't all that difficult to do, just take control of the camera and move it around whilst the 'intro' runs and put sprites on screen to introduce the game.
Been there, done that, got all the T-Shirts!

Then you would have to request (and wait for) the feature as already discussed above. Using scenes as background for menu isn't a workaround and been used for years.

Think you are right rolfy - that this is only possible by making an actual scene in GG with overlaps (unfortunately). I do miss the simplicity of FPSC's background video feature and its a shame that came so late in development so few people made use of it.

The below examples would be do-able for looped videos in Game Guru with the "press any key" sort of option to skip the video if a video was used. Though are video loops even supported with GG?

Game Guru engine has been very much about work arounds which can at times be fun but for the most part frustrating when its related to things that were so simple and easy to do in FPSC. I was really hoping to see this feature added since it was in FPSC before and GG was being commonly claimed as a successor but there are still a slew of "features" missing or not adapted and im sure some of which may not come to be. The reason why i supported the engine to begin with, was because this was the impression I was given.

One of the issues im having right now with GG comes right down to memory cap. A similar issue that caused frustration with FPSC and caused me to reduce my maps from around 7 to 4 for it to work on the user end. Adding more maps for workarounds like this is going to cause some problems as I'm already capping with my current game. My maps are quite atmospheric so id also have to do a lot of lighting and color swapping via lua just to change the scenes if they are on the same map.

If for any reason i do revisit this idea, its going to take a lot of work... overriding the camera for passes and such however it might be the only solution with this engine. So thanks rolfy for the suggestion, i might have to go with it if it doesnt take up too much memory adding another map or segregating parts of an existing map with additional lua processes.

There are quite a few features that are missing from GG that were in FPSC. The only thing that was a priority for GG was eye candy. I'm not saying that's not good; but, the young kids I know don't give a darn about it. Look at Minecraft. I only bring that up because it was (still is?) a very popular game. My Grandson likes to play games that are not realistic and a couple of games that are very realistic.

I have to admit I still keep vacillating between FPSC and GG. In fact, s4real and Nomad Soul have allowed me to have their BIM code to possibly and some of my RPG Mod into it. I'm kind of stuck right now because I'm having a hard time figuring out the errors I get in compiling. A big part of the problem is that I used several plugins that I can't activate.

@Flatlander-if you mean you can't activate DBPro plugins, you don't need to. You just need the certificates.

If you use a scene, it would also be easy to set options for a player, like what level you want them to go to.

Making a scene as the menu gives a huge amount of flexibility in gameguru.

Not sure if you can remove it completely, But you can edit all the lua files in the titlesbank folder to modify it in any way you choose.
Disabling parts and modifying others. But the video thing is not in the engine code for this yet.

I found this thread interesting and thought it would add a nice feature to Cogwheel Chronicles, so am testing new engine lua command:

PlayVideoFile("videobank\\filename.ogv",noskipflag,loopvideoflag).

So far seems to be working ok. The rendering order doesn't seem to allow text overlay of the video, but sprites are working.

Can be used in game or during standalone menu presentation.

When I have finished testing and I get more pc resources I'll post to git or if it takes a while for that perhaps I can give the code to a contributor to create the pull request instead.

Or if BOTR or anyone else gets there first, no worries

Cheers.

100 up- votes from me! This will eliminate the current menu
system that you have to swap out all those PNG's for yeah?!

I see that a video would be ultimately better because all in one it would-
A> eliminates as mentioned above.
B> publisher + credits can be shown
C> intro / story can be show
D> controls can be shown
E> ETC, ETC
It would be nice if video was played while the long process of loading
the main map was going on. Super upgrade x 10!

Awesome work there cybernescence

ogv is a video format im not familiar with but the multimedia arts studio i work in has software export options for pretty much any known video file format and codec. As long as it works by default on any computer under this format that sounds like it would be an awesome addition for GG for people trying to achieve this effect.

Something I should add by the way, in very very early Playstation 1 games... there were a few games that did not loop their splash screen "press X to Play" videos. They would copy the video on the timeline maybe 10 times so it would loop and then when the video would actually finish it would throw the player to either the main menu or restart the game to start the intro again and then the "press x to play" video screen.

So technically this is possible right now with GG in its current state. Using that sort of old work around from the later 90's early 2000s.

Yes they do. I’ve added a lua command that will play whenever needed such as at title screen or anytime in game for cut scenes (references file name in videobank) and also to make it super easy also if a video exists called intro.ogv or intro.mp4 and a setupini flag is set then this video will play just after all loading completes prior to game loop starting. I haven’t got the time to see if a video could be made to play alongside loading as this isn’t a straightforward task.

Cheers.

Unfortunately not yet - I'm hoping to get some more pc resources soonish so I can start to move some of the updates to GitHub to see if Lee wants to include them or not.

Cheers.

SPECS: Ryzen 1700 CPU. Nvidia 970GTX. 16 Gig Memory. Win 10.
