Hey guys! Lee gave me permission to work on the trading cards for GameGuru. And we need some feedback, right now I have a few very simplistic designs. Note that they look crap because I don't have access to the GG template, also the logo would obviously be replaced with a transparent one. Anyway, here is a few ideas. We could go for something illustrated, cartoony or realistic. Let me know what you think would suit the best!!

I also included the image I used to get a clue of the general scale/res of a trading card.

Orrighty! Once again, I know that they don't look good, but note that I am limited to the template, and remember that this is only to see what style you guys would prefer!

To start with, check with Lee and ask him if he wants "the easy game creator" on the logo, Lee told us in a post a while ago that he is looking into removing that from the logo because it gives the wrong impression and he was getting a lot of complaints stating it wasn't an "easy" game creator.

I assume that this means Lee will be working on integrating gameguru with the steam card API system then?

Also, to be honest, if these are gong to be official GameGuru steam cards, then i hope a little more effort than just cutting and pasting a screen grab onto a blank card will be used.

First: This is a terrible idea.

Second: You can load the stock models (characters etc.) into showcase renderers like marmoset toolbag and give it at least somewhat of an appeal.

Third: Please don't scale the screenshots non-uniformly.

Can you explain to me why you want to do this? Does Lee really want to integrate these cards? Is there other software on steam that does this?

No guys, it is not about the images I know they look bad. It is about what style could be used, nothing more. I know the resolutions suck and that the images have no detail. Its about whether you guys would like something illustrated, something from a scene or something cartoonish.

Just to add, Spriter Pro is an example of software that uses Steam trading cards. I noticed it was on the to do list. Once again I know the images look bad, just posting a general idea here. Do you guys want trading cards? If yes, what style would you like them. Was just trying to give an idea of how it could look (undetailed, im not gonna spend time in something the community is not waiting for).

So what would look best, hand drawn, illustrated, in game scenes, something else

Or maybe you guys don't want them at all. The thing about trading cards is that some people farm them. It could boost GameGuru revenue because people want the cards.

Once again its just an idea,

they're all the same for me.

pretty sure GG is classified as a game on steam and it's seen as a good idea for games to have cards - i don't really get it myself but it's free money for us so why not

belidos wrote: "to be honest, if these are gong to be official GameGuru steam cards, then i hope a little more effort than just cutting and pasting a screen grab onto a blank card will be used. "

agreed but he did say this is just a template example.

as for the actual image, i vote for screenshots and maybe have a small competition for people to submit some (maybe just give some categories in advance so people get the theme you want each card to be for).

Sounds like a good idea. But the problem is that we can't make proper trading cards ourselves because the only way to get the template is to view it on steam. These images are NOTHING LIKE A QUALITY TRADING CARD. I am just saying that they could be made.

Well if we are talking about themes and categories. We could see what everyone likes?

I can create a small form with some questions like:

Do you want to see trading cards?*
-Yes
-No (you're done)

What sort of trading cards would you like to see?
-Hand drawn
-Illustrated
-In-game scenes
-Other, I want to see ...

What themes would you like to see for the trading cards?
-Environment/terrain
-Battles
-Characters
-Other, I would like a theme about ...

Please don't rage on me lol, just giving an idea here

Not particularly, they're just nonsense and fluff, and have no bearing on the software itself.

"trading cards"? hmmmm reminds me of the "top trumps" card game we would play on the bus to school.

I've never really understood what they were all about on Steam, tbh. Every search I've done lead me to a definition that lead me to another definition and so forth, which I believe was by design. I do, however, believe that a Lee Bamber rookie card would be worth several dollars!

I think if we were to do this it should more reflect on familiar faces of Game Guru. Also I think characters have more value for the trading factor. Illustrations have no relevance to the engine.

You could make the " Bamber Card" a rare collectors edition

Not really. We have so much hate waves with dlcs, update policy and so on that I can not accept another one! It is always the same argument:
"The engine has bugs/looks old/... and the developer do other stuff. They should care about the product" We could buffer this with good comments from the community, but in the long term this will not help anybody.

But if we really need some:
Quote: "What sort of trading cards would you like to see?"

-Hand drawn
-Illustrated
-In-game scenes
Which fits best for the theme should always decide the designer. I looked at my own and the best looking cards are the ingame-scenes with a cartoon style. But I also must say the character seems quite nice, but we have no character in an engine.

Quote: "What themes would you like to see for the trading cards?"

-Everything. I want some cards which differ from the stuff I can see myself, so not a screenshot card. I would like to see some impressive in-game scenes like rolfy did or nice looking battle scenes, but also code pieces. Everything you can see in this engine, should represent in the best way

Trading cards are not what GameGuru needs, but fact is that people collect them and that they can boost revenue. A lot of people collect trading cards, which is how people level up on steam. It could boost sales

I've managed to buy a few cheap items by selling trading cards that were otherwise useless to me. From that point of view, I'm all for it. Overall, they don't really do anything for me.

I guess if they are done right and don't lead to any negatives, then why not? I'd also want to see community input for what gets published so we know the majority of active users approve of what is going out to represent us, unlike some of the awful GG games that have been published.
I tried to sign it but all I did was mess up my screen.

Couldn't agree more. Ive seen so many unfinished cash grabs lol. Why should it get any negatives from the community if the devs don't need to spend time on the cards?
