Hopefully, the rendering overhaul will help to improve active user retention a bit. If so, we should then see more activity.
Active user retention has been pretty poor so far. While not totally accurate because of offline users (like myself),
Steamcharts is a good way to ballpark the numbers.
My personal opinion is that improving graphic and scripting capabilities (not to be confused with "features") will attract more artists and scripters willing to put in the time to create the content that will retain both casual and serious users. Now that it appears that core engine framework is being improved in lieu of content orientated features, I'm much more optimistic than I was a year ago.

What is the exact problem that you are having? I just tested and 3rd person shotgun raycast iteration seems to be working just fine. You will need to increase the accuracy value in gunspec beyond the default "accuracy=50" if you want to see meaningful spread at close distance though. You can also try increasing the number of pellets by increasing the iterate value. It can be a bit dodgy to test because of the lack of tracers and short draw range of impact effects.
