I realize I might be exposing my ignorance on the subject, but not spending my life engrossed in computer lingo, I have no idea what this is.
Brief explanation if possible, please.

Or a hint as to how this technique is implemented in GG
My experience in model creation for GG is to include a DDS file in my modeling software from which I can apply individual textures from, to individual elements which when then complied as an "X" file allows GG to do the rendering bit.
