Sorry, if this has already been covered (couldn't find it when I searched ... maybe using the wrong search phrase ...), but is there an easy way to manage the entities I have placed into my map ?

Currently, I have added about 200 objects to my map and find it inefficient to scroll through the list just to see what I have placed (never mind the question where I have placed something) ...

As a matter of fact, I imported a mesh I created (in Blender) and because I did not scale it properly, it is now placed somewhere on the map and I can't find it ... a good asset manager would allow me to find any object / entity on the map

If this has been discussed, please point me to the thread ... thanks !

Cheers,
AC

This is another one of the things that's holding me back making a game, whenever I sit down and try to build a level I end up giving up in frustration because I have so many entities I can never find anything, we really need at the least some sort of filtering system for entities.

We need a search system at the very least. I have even bought similar items in the past because it can be such a chore to find stuff! I have a lot of store media and always find it tough to find the items I want.

Yes ... actually, I think there are (at least) two aspects to that:

a.) finding assets within the library of stuff (maybe a simple "search by name / category" would suffice ?)
b.) finding assets within your map (I just "lost" a couple of items by accidentally placing them "somewhere" ...)

While I think of it ... wouldn't it also be helpful to see the name of the item you select in the editor (you know ... when it shows you the translation axis and the "rotate", "properties", "scale" stuff ... add a field to show the NAME of the item) ? Because I watched a couple of videos where even Lee was having problems selecting the "right" object ...

Not a great solution to missing entities but most of the time it works. While in the test mode press f-11 turn off the terrain, water and sky , what remains will be the display of all existing entities on a black background. With a little luck you can spot your missing entities. which you should be able to remove using f-9 press "E".

With the terrain, water and the sky off you can usually spot that missing entity.

That actually is shown in the bottom of the editor.

I've always liked the tree view as far as locating assets in the map. Works in everything else I've used. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to implement; it's pretty much a staple in windows. As far as keeping track of the overall inventory of assets (not just in the current map, I use an application called P3DO Explorer. I categorize everything into a structure like: "Favorites/Buildings/Valuable Assets/Buildings" or "Favorites/Bar Props/DVader/misc" etc. It's not a horrible system and it allows me to find everything relatively quickly and it doesn't change the original file structure.

EDIT: It's by no means the best solution, I'm sure, and it's kind of a pain to set up, and it won't prevent you from buying duplicates!

Thanks for pointing that out ... it just so happens that I had a small center loudspeaker on my desk (in front of the monitor), covering the bottom line of the monitor ... and I never saw that bit of info ...

Since it "only" shows it while hovering over an object, it would still be nice to see it in the entity context menu with the "Position/Rotate/Scale/Extract/Properties..." ...

Even with all the quirks and shortcomings ... the more I play with GG, the more I like it.

Are you suggesting a LABEL for the top of the widget menu, which shows you the name of the selected entity? Perhaps in group mode, it shows the label 'Group' to indicate more than one has been selected. Does this sound helpful?

Yep ... exactly what I meant ... maybe even a NAME that we can assign to a GROUP ...

Thanks ! I'll take a look at that ... it might be a stop-gap measure to help until there is a good built-in solution.
