I am very encouraged to read in Lee's blog that there will be support for the Xbox controller. I have a physical disability and find the 'mouse' controls difficult when testing my game levels. But I think the Xbox controller will make it a lot easier. I'll probably double the Player's strength during testing to compensate for my lack of dexterity but I think the Xbox controller will still give me a better idea of how hard/easy my game is.

Forgive my ignorance, but I have a couple of questions:

Is the support only for Xbox One or will Xbox 360 work?;
How do we sync the controller with our PC? I have a laptop, I think it has Bluetooth.

All the best and please keep on the cutting edge as usual.

I would expect it to be the xbox 360 controller, also. I don't believe it matters wired vs. wireless though. In my experience, my wireless controller works exactly the same as the wired one, across all software that supports it.

Doesn't take a physical disability to involuntarily hit F1 - F4 instead of 1,2,3,4 in mid-game and end up with a tedious lightmapping action instead of a changed weapon - at least on notebook keyboards.

So, XBOX-Controller support is VERY welcome ( but PLEASE NEVER put lightmapping onto the controlles)!

Yeah, i keep pressing the F1 key too. It's a pain. But at least you can abort with Esc.

I play Skyrim on my PC with the Xbox controller. The difference is amazing so I look forward to this on GameGuru.

I guess they've withdrawn the xbox controller for now. Bummer.

(But I'm sure it will be spectacular when they add it back in!)

Don't worry ....Its not been taken away just disabled whilst they sort the compatibility issues ...
it will be back....you might even be able to re enable it in the setup.ini to see if yours works .

You can use an Xbox 360 controller right now if you want. The answer is a glovepie. I have a script written out somewhere I did for my brother to use the controller with guru. Although, I did have the control set to use with the editor not with gameplay but that could be a quick fix. If anybody would be willing to provide me with what the controller layout was supposed to be I could edit the script and post it. I don't think I'm allowed to post a download for glovepie so you'll probably have to get that on your own. its free!

1. If you don't have the Xbox360 controller drivers you need to go here and click support then download them:

http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/xbox-360-controller-for-windows#support

2. Next you need to download and install glovepie found here:

http://www.glovepie.org/

3. Download the script below and open it with glovepie. Have your controller plugged in and click and run (at the top center of glovepie)
Now you have a working Xbox360 controller for game guru.

Here is the button layout
RB = sprint
LB = reload
RT = fire
LT = AIM
Y = use
B = crouch
X = reload (alternate)
A = jump
Left stick = movement
Right stick = camera
DPAD = weapon select 1-4

There's a section at the bottom of the code that's made to make the controller rumble. You would have to delete that. To make it easy, here's a rumble free version below so just use this one instead

edit: I decided to make a thread in third party tools that explains how to modify the script to customize controls and has both downloads there

Thanks, mguy! This is brilliant! I also discovered another excellent program: http://joytokey.net/en/download

If, like me, you find your mouse or laptop touchpad awkward to use for editing your games, you can use this app to set up your Xbox controller to operate as a mouse and also assign keyboard buttons to buttons on the controller. I've found it very useful.

I have used joytokey, that one works well too. I guess I just gotten used to glovepie so I forgot to mention it. I really can't use the controller myself or the standard keyboard and mouse so the only time I messed with controller emulation is when someone else needs it. Good suggestion for everybody else on here though

I am curious to know from a dev when the official support for controllers will end up showing up? I know it's not a priority but is it really hard to implement?

It is definatly not so easy like you maybe think But I never coded controller support, I did not have the source, so I could be wrong
My dream is to develope games, which makes fun when I create it and fun when other people play it.

Its only been disabled you can re enable it in the setup....It has been implemented .... But the problem is that it was found that configuration is not straight forward .... Different variations of official XBOX controllers were doing weird things so it was put on the back burner to get on with more pressing things.

No doubt it will be revisited but you can try enabling it in the setup and see if it works for you ...XBOX = 1 I think

@Synchromesh @Corno_1 Thank you for your responses! I was more curious more than anything else. I prefer mouse/keyboard but I know too many people who prefer controllers. I guess I'll keep tinkering with glovepie and think of ways to implement controller support a another way without user intervention being involved. I do remember seeing the line for controller support in the setup but not in the latest version.
