Had you tried the 3d textures than
textures.com has?
They has a very nice 3d river stones textures, mossy, etc, even take at look to the 3d scan they has. Or maybe you already know all this, if so excuse me.
I'm working now in a bunch of spreaded river stones to be placed as decals on the banks of the rivers.
I've used some of these 3d txtures to try, and it works fine to me.
I firts make all the stones on 3ds max , and yes you end with a very hight poly, not because the polys each one has, but for the quantity of stones you has to place there to compound the scene. I've make my stones with projection modifiers, so I've applied it to a low poly stone getting the same effects with lowpoly stones, even rocks. The same with the textures but generating normal texture with projection and apply it to a lowpoly stone\rock. Again if you already know all this wall of post, please excuse me.
