HI guys, tonight I made my first solo model! While deciding what to make I was browsing the script forum and saw small's flashlight script, so I thought to myself, ooh some batteries would go well with that, so that's what I made, for most of you they're nothing special, but for me they're awesome because it's the first model I've ever made by myself, and i'm giving it away free!

EDIT: I'll list them all in the first post so they're easier to find.

Thanks, I did a couple of things wrong, to start with the file sizes came out a lot higher than I expected, i think it's because I used 2048 resolution textures on a small model, i'm going to do another one sometime soon using lower resolution textures and see how much difference it makes.

I've remade the battery to a lower resolution today, it's not quite as pretty looking but it's a quarter of the file size of the original.

Thanks Unfamilia, I couldn't have done it without your tutorials (and the emails back and forth), I couldn't even work out the controls until I watched them, the way you step by step it all and tell the viewer exactly what keys to use is really helpful.

I fixed the issue with the pink texture I was having btw.

For some reason I didn't have a texture slot created for painting mode. So in texture mode I had to go to the slots tab, click on the painting mode drop down, select image, and then in the canvas image dropdown select my Diffuse.png. Est voila textures in texture mode and no pink mess

I already have an idea cooking, i'm going to try making a leaky pipe that drips. Just need to find a decent video explaining animation in blender.

Yeah, thanks 3Com. I've been watching a lot of videos about animation in blender and it actually looks pretty simple. Blender has a feature where you can set the start frame, save the position of the item, then select the end frame and save a new position, then it automatically fills it in. After that you can adjust the "curve" of the motion, moving it between smooth movement, a bell curve where it starts slow and speeds up, vice versa or anything in between, I looks fairly simple. I'll probably go with a curve that makes the drip start slow and get faster the further it falls.

Thanks teamhalo, I decided to do batteries in different types as my first project because they're fairly simple shapes, and I could only find one battery (apart from various types of car battery) in the store, and what with smallg giving away his flashlight battery script I thought it would be a great opportunity for me to give back to the community, you're welcome to use the batteries for whatever project you like commercial or not

I need to redo the texture on the pipe though, I noticed when putting a couple end to end last night that the texture isn't quite seamless, it a little darker at one end so los odd when you lay them together, all I need to do is flip a copy horizontally, stitch them together and scale them down, it only needs to be seamless horizontally, the vertical seams are behind the model and not visible.

The pipe is eventually going to be a pack of pipes that link together, it will include t-junctions, elbow bends, and both horizontal and vertical pipes in a couple of lengths, as well as (if I can do it) a couple of animated drips and some puddle decals.

I've decided to do the animated drips separately to the pipes themselves, i'll probably make them to drop from a couple of meters above head height, that way they can be moved up or down and the drips won't disappear before hitting the floor if you move it too high.

Looking good. You seem to have grasped Blender well.

With regards to having a seamless texture on your pipes; I agree it would be good practice to get the texture aligned properly, to allow for seamless joints between models. However, what I would do and have done in the past, is to add a pipe joint at one end (thicker section of pipe that the other end can slot into). That way, if the texture is a bit darker on one end, it's fine.

Thanks, i'm quite pleased wit my progression considering only a week ago I didn't even know how to rotate the camera in edit view

Yeah I was thinking of doing it that way as you can see in my concept drawings, but I got lazy when I was making the model. I must learn not to cut corners.

Oooh just had another idea! A shut off valve that animates when you hit E, it shouldn't be much more difficult to do than a door animation and would open up a world of possibilities, see pic below for reference.

Yes! I love lever pipes like like. Makes me think of Half Life. I made a weapon model like that back in the day, here is what it looked like. Never got around to animating it like a weapon though, sadly.


I would love to see something animated like that working in action, maybe a way to control the opening of a door or something. I'll be following this thread

Thanks sunchromesh, Blender is a little difficult to pick up because t relies on so many shortcuts etc, but once you get used to it it's pretty simple.

I'm tryong to animate that valve at the moment but I just can't seem to get it to work ingame, it animates in blender and in meshviewer but just won't work in game, i'm fairly sure I have all the fpe stuff right, I just can't figure it out.

Yay I got it to animate properly in the game, but only if I remove the texture, if it has a texture you can open it and close it and it animates fine, but after you close it the whole model goes invisible, can't work out why.

Thanks Harry, i'm still trying to figure out how to texture it fully though, in blender to get it to animate you have to have the handle and the main part of it as separate objects, and when you go to texture you have to texture both objects separately, I can do all that, but i'm not sure how to merge them into a single texture set for GameGuru.

Anyone know? Is it just a matter of arranging the textures so that the two files can be merged in the paint package of choice? or is it more complicated than that?

BTW, if anyone wants to know, the issue I was having with it was that when I imported it into GG the animations worked fine to open it, but when I closed it the animations cycled and the model disappeared. I fixed it by changing materialindex = 3 to materialindex = 1 in the fpe, not sure what else that will effect but it seems to have done the job.

(p.s. having a nightmare at the moment, bought a new keyboard today and i'm so not used to it, keep hitting the wrong keys lol)

The pipe, elbow join and valve are now available in the store, I will be adding, a drip, a couple of puddles, a t-joint, a tap, and a couple of different sized pipes over time, I will also add a couple of those pipes to my free list here eventually.

I've made a half sized version of the Rusty Pipe and a Joint piece which I have attached to the opening post for free, I've also added these to the store for the minimum price of 5 cents so that they can be included in future packs without being effected by the free download cap.

Added another free model to the list:

(Please note: This is just a quick model as a proof of concept for a future project so the textures aren't perfectly aligned etc and there is an issue with some extra geometry on one of the tail fins, but it's perfectly fine if you don't study every pixel)

This is a free tree line, it's two planes back to back with an image of a tree line on it, it's great to fake tree lines at a distance, to bulk out a real tree line, or behind a wall, or hedge etc.
