In order to stop it being pink in Blender, you just have to assign the texture again. Do this by selecting your model, go into edit mode and press 'A' until everything is highlighted. Then, in the image editor (in Blender) open the diffuse texture you have created. It should apply it to your model.

I tried to export your model with the settings I have and experienced the same as you. So, I just changed the settings until something worked.

I unchecked 'Export selected objects only and changed the coordinate system back to right handed. Voila, it worked.

I have attached your model.

Cheers

It will be coming out small if you dimensions are that low.

Add a plane and change the scale of it to:

X:100

Y:100

Z:2

That is the exact size of one floor unit in Reloaded. (I think its roughly 8 foot wide)

Then, just scale the barrier to how you see fit. Keep in mind, the barrier in real life will probably be nearly as wide as the floor plane.

Don't forget to delete the floor panel before you export.

Video 7 in the series is now live.

In this episode, I show you how to texture the damaged section of the barrier. (with a difference) You won't even need to open GIMP for this one! All the texturing is done inside Blender.

As I state in the video, I'm not going to record the video showing you how to create medium damage on the barrier. I will miss that video out. I want to let you use your new artistic skills and show me what you guys can do now.

So, the next video, will be really messing the barrier up! Serious damage! We are going to cut this thing in half, exposing all the steel supports inside.

I hope this helps a few people.

The new video can be found here.

I am looking forward to doing the next one.

There is something rather satisfying about completely destroying your model!

Thanks for the guidance.. I find the videos to be very helpful. Might take a while to achieve what I want to achieve but you have helped me to piece together my workflow and for that I thank you. I'm about to start on my first journey creating and texturing a model in blender and gimp and importing it into FPS Reloaded!

hi, thanks for these as i want to try make some basic models but i have an issue when starting... i'm using blender 2.7a and no image appears on screen when i add it to background images, any ideas?

edit: ok apparently i need to press numpad 1 and then numpad 3 to get the image to show

edit2: so i see the texture file inside blender (on the left screen) but it doesnt appear on the model like it does for u?

like so...

(mine is slightly different model but i followed your process)

edit again: ok i found it, blender crashed and my seams got messed up so the texture isnt applying correctly, need to redo the texture and all will be good

You could get a YouTube downloader? Although, I'm not 100% about the legitimacy of those things?

Glad they could help.

Video number 8 is now up.

In this video, we take our concrete barrier and really mess it up! But, in a good way! (kind of)

I show you how to break a huge chunk off your model and add the twisted broken metal bars.

You can find the video here.

I hope it helps.

Looking very good. I'm going to be giving Blender a serious shot. I've also been talking to a few people about creating a real Tutorial Compendium for ReLoaded here, to store tutorials of this quality from users such as yourself. I will hit you up when I know more.

Till then; I'd like to see a tutorial on a simple animated entity, such as a treasure chest opening up, etc.

Thats sounds like a great idea.

I was thinking about creating something like, just to ease people into animations.

I have already started work on an ammo/supply crate that will animate; so, I might just remake that one for the tutorial.

Would you be interested in seeing how I made the box and lid or just how to rig, weight paint and animate?

Unfamillia,

I am having an issue when I try to unwrap my model. It looks like I am missing at least one bar and have 4 extra items that I can't identify what they are, I am using Blender 2.70a. Attached is my .blend file with the seams marked before unwrapping. Also, if I try to go ahead and bake it blender tells me it cannot find the file. Any assistance would be appreciated. Please note that I have added bars on the top and a few extra edge cuts.

Thanks,

synchromesh,

I had a great holiday thanks. The lack of internet is never good!

@All,

I am back now and will be recording the texture tutorial for the extreme damage model tonight. If I get time, I will also be recording the start of the new series as requested by our very own Keith C.

However, I have a question for everyone.

I will be showing you how to model, texture, animate and export a box of some description, that can be used in game to store items, and open when the player gets close or presses a button.

Which box would everyone prefer me to model?

Classic treasure chest.

Science Fiction Supply Crate

Standard munitions box.

Cheers

ok, well, that's 2 votes for Treasure chest.

As 100% of the votes are for the Treasure chest, I can safely say that I will be modelling a treasure chest.

Should be good. I will try to get it all done in as few videos as possible.

I would do it all in one huge video, but, my computer, internet connection and YouTube wouldn't like me for it!

The last and final part of the series is now up.

I have spent FAR too much time on this little barrier, but, I hope that people have managed to learn something and maybe gain some skills within 3D modelling.

In this video I show you how to texture the seriously damaged barrier that we modelled in the last video.

I would love to see how other people have done with these videos, so, please feel free to post your finished models in this thread. Share your work with the world. Even if you think its bad, share it anyway and get some constructive criticism.

You can find the link here.

I have the same problem as @Super Clarke!

It seems like the normals are flipped, but they are not. I've double checked it. I also tried to flip them, with no result.

Also the export settings for DirectX is set to left-handed.

I use the latest version of blender (2.70). I can't remember I had this problem with previous versions of Blender.

Any ideas?

I had to change mine to "Right Handed" then exported..

All was fine after that ....

It must be a bug in the latest blender maybe...Every model I import will export flipped unless I select "Right Handed" ?

Well, something is VERY wrong...

I use Blender 2.70 and FPSCR 1.006

In Blender, just for testing, I use the default cube, deleting only one side (face).

When saving (DirectX) with option Left Handed, I got a whole black cube, regardless of how many sides (faces) I've deleted ?!

When saving with option Right Handed I got like the normals are inverted, but they are not.

AND the most strangly is if I try use both of the models above (one saved with left handed option, the other with right handed option). The only one that will dispay in both editor and in game, is the first one added in the editor.

Is there major bugs in the exportfunction in Blender and/or is it also problems with FPSCR?

This is running me complete mad. Can't see any logic.

Is it just me or does someone else have these strange behaviors as well?

Just to let everyone know, I am working on the new series of videos.

In the new series, I will show you how to model a simple treasure chest (as per request), how to texture it, how to rig and animate it and finally, how to import the animated model into reloaded with the working scripts.

I have been practising the design of the chest and have put together a few render shots to show you what we will be making.

Hope you are looking forward to the new videos.

Thanks Keith.

I did actually record the first part of the new series last night, however, the video lasted nearly an hour and only covered the basic mesh. No rigging, no animation, not even texturing! So, I deleted that one! I am going to re-record the first part and try to keep it down to 20 mins(ish).

I realised after, that I was chatting on about why we do certain things in modelling and why this joint should be here and how locks work! If I deleted those sections out, we would be left with a short 20 minute video; which wouldn't make much sense, as you would be catching the end of conversations I am having with myself!

I will be recording again tomorrow night and will try to get more than one video done.

Cheers

The export function in Blender has gone a bit 'doolally'. When I first started to record these videos, I was using 2.69; that exporter was fantastic. you tell it to export and it does, no need to change settings, no flipped normals.

To be honest, if you don't want the newer features of 2.70, then, I would advise stepping back to 2.69 until the X exporter has been fixed.

You can get 2.69 from here.

I believe this will solve all of your exporting issues.

This also applies to anyone else following this thread. If you are only interested in using Blender for assets in Reloaded, then, uninstall 2.70 and install 2.69. There are no errors when exporting.

I hope this helps.

I do use some of the newer features in 2.70 for high detail renders, but, I will step back and start using 2.69; it will make it much easier on everyone having issues exporting properly.

I think you can actually have multiple instances of Blender installed at the same time; so, I should be able to install both version and work with which suits my needs at that time.

I use FastStone Capture.

Its really light, cheap, saves the videos as (fairly) small files sizes and just works!

You get a 30 day trial to test it out first, then after that, the lifetime licence is $19.95.

Here is the link.

Are you thinking of making your own tutorials? Or is this to capture game footage?
