Is there a way to import a model that has over 100 materials?

No max has a 100 material hard limit.
Win10 Pro 64bit----Intel i7 4770k @ 3.5GHZ----GTX 1660 6gig----16gig ram

Unfortunately no but ( if you have the know how ) you could split the model into 2 segments assuming its something big.
