Fortunately I always backup old versions before the update so that I can use it, because upon this update, the steam version was downloaded.

I don't want the steam version, never paid for the steam version and I will never purchase the steam version because I don't want no middleware crap.

Is the update system corrupted ?

It would seem so and has already been reported on Github.
No one ever really leaves.

Apparently, TGC recently added some security in the form of Steam Authenticity checking of some kind (from what I've heard). With the current Steam version, you can't even run MAX if Steam is in Offline Mode! My guess is this "feature" got propagated to all versions of MAX, regardless of whether they were Steam versions or not.
