Calling all GameGuru MAX users - make a demo level using real world height map data and enter it into our Real World Game Level Competition!

By using the Terrain Editor height map import feature you can bring in real world height map data on which to base your game level's design.

Prizes
1st Prize - $250
2nd Prize - $100
3rd Prize - $50
4th Prize - $50
5th Prize - $50

Competition Rules
* Game must be a single level game made in GameGuru MAX
* Entries must be submitted by 27 May 2022 @ 11:59 UTC
* Game to use stock media from GameGuru MAX - if third party assets are used they MUST be free to use
* All winning entries will be added to the Demo Games that come with GameGuru MAX

Judging
* TGC will judge the entries and their decision will be final
* Recognisable and famous world locations will score better than unknown locations
* Only one competition entry per person
* Late entries will not be considered

How to submit your game
* For convenience we would prefer users first submit a video of their game. This will be quicker for us to review entries. If you then make the top titles we will request a standalone version of the game from you
* Submit your video link to rick@thegamecreators.com
Read the full announcement and see the videos HERE

One source of Heightmaps can be exported from this HEIGHT MAP WEBSITE

If you follow the link provided, you will see that the winners will be added to the demo games provided with MAX. This means that they need to be levels that can be edited by other users. So, they will ultimately require the actual level.

I have many questions

1. Is there a [free] tool available you can recommend we use to generate these real world height map files? Unless I'm overlooking a button on Google Earth, or I missed some crucial information in one of the videos, not exactly sure where we're supposed to be getting these files from?

2. Are you guys looking for a demo level with bad guys, objectives and shootie bang bangs, or just a "walking simulator" to show off the new height maps feature? Will one of these score more points than the other?

3. Would you prefer assets only be stock? Will it affect judging negatively in any way if entries use custom assets?

4. If using custom game assets, where would you like them to go? Any specific naming conventions in mind for the file paths and folders for user generated content, since some of these entries may be shipping with GGM?

5. Can we be creative with the real world locations, or would you like them to be realistic? For example, can I bury the Sahara Desert under twenty feet of snow?

So, free from internet but not the assets designed by the users themselves.

This site is one such source: HEIGHT MAP WEBSITE

Quote: "2. Are you guys looking for a demo level with bad guys, objectives and shootie bang bangs, or just a "walking simulator" to show off the new height maps feature? Will one of these score more points than the other?"

This is really up to you! The better the experience, the higher it will rank.

Quote: "3. Would you prefer assets only be stock? Will it affect judging negatively in any way if entries use custom assets?"

Extra assets can make an entry stand out and look different so it's always a bonus to use them.

Quote: "4. If using custom game assets, where would you like them to go? Any specific naming conventions in mind for the file paths and folders for user generated content, since some of these entries may be shipping with GGM?"

For now just put them into user/gamename

We're looking for entries that will make people think, oh I can make a game about a certain location in the world. So if you choose a desert that sort of missing the point.

Hope my answers help.

So you're suppose to guesstimate where on map you are by tabbing between Google Earth and that site?

Eh nevermind, I've wasted enough time trying to find a good site for map data today. Not for me.

Unless you recreate the areas by eyeing the location from Google map, you'll probably easily find locations which are more famous in west than anywhere else (like Grand Canyon, with so many references available).

Living in the Netherlands, a flat map creating part of the Netherland is also good?

I've tried something with substance, we could create those heightmaps in substance or other software in which painting height data is possible.
For area's with less elevation this should provide a good way to still be creating something nice if you have a particular area in mind.

Got mine working yesterday after an hour or so of learning something new. Very large map to detail. Many days of work ahead.

I'm doing Mount Everest.

Figured I'd mention it so we (hopefully) don't get too many entries that are using the same location.

Quote: "So you're suppose to guesstimate where on map you are by tabbing between Google Earth and that site?"

You can grab the longitude/latitude coordinates from Google Earth and update the URL on the heightmap site (last two decimal numbers). Worked for me.

Uluru - The Flooding.

What if most of Australia flooded and the only safe place was Uluru, well you made it there. It seems you were the only one, or were you?

You heard rumours of a food, weapons and medical supplies cache hidden inside Uluru, if it isn't flooded maybe, just maybe you could survive, and find other survivors too. Good Luck.

Home sweet home.

As long as I have time I have an idea for a level. If Max behaves.

@Tarkus1971
Uluru is classified as site of cultural significance and sacred site. The use of its image or name in a commercial project is significantly controlled, Such use requires permission of the original owners (Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara people), Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park council and the Australian Government.
Just so you know.

It's part of an international agreement and its not just Australian sites there are thousands of sites all over the world that are subject to such restrictions. Its a little like international copyright and patent agreements.

Took on a interesting project, currently in the testing phase, but so far it is promising. You can probably gather from the image what I am planning :p

Thanks, not 100% happy with the textures. ran into some problems with, sloped wall angles, player collision is iffy in that, the player will slow down at a slight angle, speed up, slow down, speed up ect. So had to abandon the idea of the wall following the contours of the terrain I selected from the height map used.Another problem was some parts of the wall and surrounding area are quite bushy with a short type of trees and coverage and growth in some areas it is quite overgrown, but there is nothing in the stock library that quite meets the look and feel, but it is close enough.

But getting there, started with populating the environment a little, found, that there is grass and trees growing on some neglected parts of the wall and focusing on that aspects.

I think the level came out pretty okay, wish I had several months to do the walls, proper justice, but they will do in a pinch.
