If you mean what I think you mean, what you probably could do is whip up a basic wall shape in blender en unwrap it. A plane will do just fine for this purpose and import this, giving this a full 100% transparent texture.

There is an invisible wall entity in Classic, not sure if there is one in MAX somewhere.
Been there, done that, got all the T-Shirts!

Not sure it makes the wall transparent in the editor as well; so, at least for me, the way to go is using a normal wall and attaching some script that makes it invisible, in the game.

You don't need a script to make a wall invisible. Anything can be made invisible in MAX and be used as a barrier. All you have to do is, once selected, go to the Object Tools on the right side, open the Materials panel, and drag Alpha Clipping all the way to the left (to 0). That will make the object completely invisible. For best results, make sure the object is set to Static and choose whatever collision method is best for this objec.

With the script, you just have the wall invisible in-game, while you can work with it, and remember that it is there, in the editor.
In other words, invisible wall in-game, visible wall in the editor; and yes, maybe you don't need the wall visible in the editor, but this doesn't mean that others do not.
