What is the difference between MAX .bmp files and Classic .bmp files? I have yet to find something that opens them.

Try Irfan View. It's working for me, but often states that the BMP is really a .DDS. That also explains why dedicated BMP Viewers are failing.

Which .bmp's are you referring to in MAX ?

I regularly use a file manager to look at all files in Classic and Max but the bmp entity files in the Booster pack open with a red cross and no image. I have come across this once in GG Classic or FPSC. Curiosity more than anything as to why I cannot open them.

As yrkoon has said for some reason they are saved as dds but with a bmp extension not sure why ?
Change the extension to dds and you can open them don't forget to change back to bmp or MAX may complain

Well renaming to .dds and using either Gimp or Paint.net just gives me a grey rectangle!

Why on earth aren't they .png format? They are for display in windows after all not in game!
Been there, done that, got all the T-Shirts!

They wont .. They are just blank backgrounds for the thumbnails that are auto generated by Max ..
There is nothing to open. There are no pictures.

Don't look too deep under the hood - you won't be able to lower your eyebrows for a while. MAX does some pretty weird stuff in there!

BMP thumbs are now auto-generated by GGMax, so, we don't have to deal with, something less to do, better for me; after all, it is just a thumb, and has nothing to do with the final result.
The BMP file is open by Gimp as a DDS file, and it is just the thumbnail background.
I think the BMP extension is just talking to the user it is the thumb and nothing else, and it is DDS because GGMax like GG works best with DDS files, due so, GGMax converts all the non-DDS texture files to DDS, giving it some extra work to GGMax, when own texture files are non_DDS format.

I dunno ...
Backgrounds for generated pics or static Background pics themselves. Is there a difference ?

If they are just static backgrounds then you don't need one per model!

The ones I looked at were all just a plain grey and are 177Kb in size, why not just have a small data file specifying which static background to use.

I think they need to be individual for the various background themes to attach to ?
If they were all a default grey then no probs just the one for all i guess.
You would know more about that than me
