Here's a trick for you (works best if the widget is turned off, but can work with the widget on, too, with a little practice) - hold down SHIFT then click on an object you want to duplicate and release the mouse and move the cursor. You should get a duplicate of the object that is following your mouse and you can place it wherever you like. If you want to create and place many duplicates, just keep the SHIFT key pressed (don't release) and click, release, drag, place, click, release, drag, place, etc. As long as that SHIFT key is held down, every time you click and release, you will generate and place a new copy of that first object you clicked on.
