There is no Light Mapper in Max.
No one ever really leaves.

When I preview the game it says on the screen "No light baking reverting back to real time".
So is it something that is coming or do we not need it with the new engine?

There is no lightmapping/baking in MAX at all. It is all real-time/dynamic lighting.

That's WickedEngine. It has lightmapping. MAX does not, even though it uses WickedEngine. There are many features that WickedEngine has that MAX does not. Also, one thing to keep in mind is that WickedEngine's lightmapper is still an alpha version, last I checked (I could be wrong here ... it's been a month or more since I last looked at it).

In any case, according to TGC, they do not plan to have lightmapping in MAX, but only use real-time/dynamic lighting/shadows in MAX.

That is perfect actually it solves quite a few rendering problems, and there is nothing wrong with a realtime/dynamic lighting sure it eats a LOT of memory and a rendering hog, at highest settings, however two, three years from now, the performance will have doubled, with new hardware, so definitely long term it is better.

I am all for the new system, I didn't even bake lightmaps in classic..........was pretty pointless, lee him self admitted very few people actually use it.
