Is there more control over the particles in MAX than just Opacity and Speed? Is there somewhere else you can go to affect things like how large the effect is? A way to make the column of smoke taller, change it color, or any other parameters within MAX itself?

yes,
very easily ..you can change it size...
just go in to...
the particle you want to effect and go to..
POSITIONING, ROTATING and SCALING..
and use SCALING to make it bigger and then use..
POSITIONING to make it more visible.

Turns out you can scale and rotate particles with the scale and rotate sliders, but not with the scale and rotate gizmo. Just an FYI.
