Depending on the distance from the player in game, the different stages of Level Of Detail versions of the 3D model will load. This is good for performance with complex looking objects. Its automatic by default, using the sliders in the editor's settings as reference point. I believe you can control the distance also individually for objects in their FPE settings.
I've not used these FPE settings, but here are a few:
lod1distance = #
lod2distance = #
This should allow you to force at what point the LOD variant loads. Maybe you can trick the model into only loading LOD2 by having it the closest to the player by distance.
There are also these FPE settings (though again ive not personally modified them to see what results you'll get):
