I am trying to use some terrain texture for a game. I have got the mypic_D.png and mypic_N.dds. I have tried gimp and paint.net for the dds files and various sizes from 64 to 2048 for both png and dds pics obviously. None of them appear in the 16 texture box. Nor do any of them work. Most of the originals work but some do not.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you putting your textures in the terrainbank folder?

In the editor, in terrain painting mode, try right clicking on one of the textures, it should bring up a folder to choose new textures from. That is where you new textures should be placed.

Hi Pirate Myke.
That is what I have been doing. Some time, more than a year ago, I used some of my own textures and they are still in the folder and still work. But any new ones I just cant get them to work.

I think you need to add an alpha channel to the texture for some strange reason.
Something changed a few builds back.
The only person ever to get all his work done by "Friday" was Robinson Crusoe..

Yes, terrain textures need an alpha channel in the diffuse texture because the specular texture is placed in the alpha channel of the diffuse texture.

Yeah as synchromesh and Belidos said, you will need to have an Alpha channel or they simply won't work with 16 terrain system.

The _D has the Alpha channel - which determines how shiny\wet it looks in game - and can be .png or .dds.
The _N should be a .dds file.
The textures are best kept to 1024x1024. GG will make a super texture using all the textures in the pallet.

Got the problem sorted. oops. Thank you for your help. It has been so helpful.
Last time I did the textures, I used Adobe Photoshop. Now using Gimp and paint.net. WOW. what a difference it makes.
The tree pic was one I just used to try when others failed. Thinking that it was the image or some other thing. The image I wanted to use is this one of a beach to surround the sea. Looks good now. In-fact its perfect. What I have noticed is the image is 180 degrees the wrong way, so slipped it to make it fit in.
