I thought I'd cracked my drinking problem. I worked on a very big game development project for over a year. I immersed myself in it, I was focused laser-like on it day and night. And I never touched a drop of alcohol. Nearest and dearest told me I was addicted to my work and it was damaging my health. They were right. My scoliosis was worsening due to constantly being at my desk and tense. Plus I had no social life.

Then I completed my mission. The game was finished and published. With hindsight I know that particular addiction had actually been saving me. It allowed me to escape into a world of my own making - a world much less harsh than reality. Now bereft of my sheild, I turned to the familial fallback method of escape - booze.

Posting here, totally inappropriately (apologies), because I can't post this on Facebook.

I've found that problems only arise when I sober up, so now I just try to stay drunk.
Been there, done that, got all the T-Shirts!

Apart from the odd glass of wine or can of beer on special occasions (xmas, birthdays etc.), i've been pretty much sober for 25 years now and i don't miss it, in fact i feel like i never needed it in the first place, i only started drinking in the first place because .. well ... sergeants mess is all i need to say :p In my case the incentive i needed to stop was it almost killed me when my liver failed and i ended up in hospital.

I only know that if you drink to forget, pay the bill before you start. LOL

One day someone asked my uncle if coffee did not prevent him from sleeping, he replied that the only coffee that prevented him from sleeping was the one that was still in the pot. And it is that coffee is the nectar of the gods.

Keep up mate, in most better being drunk with fps rather than with alcohol, in real life usually there is not game over.

Well, I'm one of those freakish people who can't stop after one or two drinks. I guess I forgot that and slipped up. Good news is I have immersed myself in a new project (a kind of Broforce clone) and it's keeping away from booze. Being addicted to the work is defo preferable to being addicted to the booze.
