It's not really as simple as what is the best, they all do slightly different things, but i think most will agree that F3 is the one most generally use.

And of course the light mapper crashed when you switch out of it to use the browser, it's an intense process that needs to be focused on the screen to render properly, it's highly recommended to let the light mapper do it's thing and not to switch windows and take the focus away, the same advice applies to most applications that are rendering too, Blender can do the same if it loses focus while rendering.

F1 - Quick light map, just like real time shadows. - Use this for checking rough placement
F2 - A Lightmap that will bake the textures, and mesh - Just bake the scene sun color
F3 - Lightmap for lights - Bakes the lights in to the terrain and objects
F4 - Full lightmapping and occlusion - This takes the longest, but combines the other three lightmapping modes.
---------------------------------------------------------
F4 is pretty redundant now as occlusion settings are independent of the light mapper
You wont gain a thing using F4 except a long wait.

Can someone add the lightmapper crash when switch tasks to issues tracker (if not already there), I think we can call that a bug

I think it's more of a resource usage issue with windows, i've seen unity and blender do the same thing when you take the focus away from the program while they render/map.
