Just a quick question really, what is he maximum number of entities allowed in a single map, memory permitting. Is there an upper limit.

You are restricted by your hardware and the quality of your models.
I did not seen any line in the code like:
if(entityNumber>5000) print "to much entities"

there probably is a limit somewhere for things like shaders or physics etc that may cause an issue when you go past a certain number but as corno said, the real limit is going to be frame rate and you're going to hit that way before you hit any invisible number limit in GG (i've used scripts to place thousands of trees and bushes etc and never had any issue).

Well as said above your unlikely to hit it but the maximum number allowed by a 32bit system is 2,147,483,647. So that is the theoretical limit Your defo gonna run out of memory before you hit that many though and it may be a little slow :p
SPECS: Ryzen 1700 CPU. Nvidia 970GTX. 16 Gig Memory. Win 10.

Depends on your hardware really, but I'd generally advise against maps of that size.

Thanks to everyone on that, i'm not planning to fill a single map with entities, but have all levels spread out on 1 map with limited camera distance then when the player completes a section of the map he will be "moved" to the next section.
