For the terrain Diffuse texture use dxt5 compression or the 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32 bit unsigned.
The alpha channel in this map is used for the gloss in the texture.

For the Normal map use the 8.8.8.8 ARGB 32 bit unsigned option

Hi, to open\edit a file that is already in dds format or to save them out, you will need the nVidia Plugin.

On my system the nVidia tools work fine for saving out the various .dds maps, but tend to crash when trying to use the Normal tool, so when making normal maps by hand I use The Gimp which has similar tools out there.

Bare in mind that .dds is a lossy format, so the more times a .dds map is opened\re-saved the more detail it loses, so best to make the file in png and save as .dds map when you happy with it.
