if you can stand 15 mins of my waffle I have tried to help clear up the confusion on smoothing groups/hard-soft edges/vertex normal/ngons, whatever you like to call them.

I am not a professional artist I am just a self taught hobbyist so I may have made mistakes or done it wrong please comment and point out where I have gone wrong so that others can learn from my mistakes.

Yeah, the extra faces are a sketchup thing, it doesn't do that in Blender.
