Problem: Gridlines on water
Repeatable: Yes, just use a script to call hide terrain
Image - attached

Hi all

So been messing with having no terrain for that instant FPS boost.

Wanted to have a section where water is visible and created several scripts for this purpose - but when I hide the terrain the water has these gridlines everywhere.

The script to hide terrain only (like all the others I made) is a copy of 'goutdoors' that ships with gg. Just removed the line to hide water and renamed to 'terrainhide'.

I have an old map that is almost completely water (lowered all terrain using the terrain tools) and it has no gridlines at all, which leads me to think it is a bug when calling hide terrain via the script, but me no guru - lol

You can see the issue in the attached image.

It looks like the gridlines are from the terrain, but could be wrong of course.

So is this is a bug with calling hideterrain, or I am missing something?

So did some more playing and I think it is definitely a bug - or at least a no-can-do scenario.

Made another quick map, put some mountains and holes on it and used the script in my OP. You can see that the gridlines are actually from the terrain - see image attached - since they follow the contour of the lumps and bums, you even still get reflections from the mounds.

So is this fixable, or is it just not possible to have an ocean with no terrain at all?

Looks like an issue but as a workaround drop the "water & reflections" slider to 25 or below. This gets rid of the lines for me.

Cheers.

Hi reliquia

the way I do it is make sure my terrain as a base so for this https://forum.game-guru.com/thread/217974?page=2 (the last video I posted) I created an entity and in the marina area I dropped it 3 meters below my ground level, I placed my marina on a new flat level then used shift+terrain to create a dip just below my model base (3 meters +) then I used the terrain level tool and created the water line where I needed it, I textured the base of my marina so that I could see when my water line was below it, my water needs to be slightly higher I've not messed with the new ini settings yet getting my scene right first

Thanks for the input GraPhix

Just came on to say that if you lower all your terrain below the water line and use hidterrain command you don't get gridlines.

Hi all,
The bottom line is that if the ground level is below water level, you can call hideterrain, and not get any grid lines

In reference to last post, actually all I did was change the defaultwaterheigt from 500 to 700 in setup ini so it is already above ground level.

Interestingly if you do that, you can survive under water considerably longer than normal - well about 3 seconds - lol!

You could also choose to lower the defaultterrainheight instead.

Obviously doing it this way makes all your maps under water, so it is probably better idea to raise the waterlevel using lua commands that have been added (I think) - so off to play with that.

Edit: I may just be blind but it appears there are no Lua commands yet to raise\lower water. So stuck with setup settings for now....
