Start with a blank flat map. assign the variation texture to slot 14. This will use 4 textures that appear when you sculpt the terrain.
slot 1, 4, 9, 15.

Now start making your mountains and valleys and so forth. The terrain will auto paint those textures as you sculpt.
This should be in the public live version as well as the public preview.

If you look in your GG/Docs folder you will find a PDF I did called 'Terrain Palette' it will give you a basic idea on how to use the variation method.

When I get a little time I will create one just for the variation slot and how to create your own.
Welcome to the real world!

GraPhiX: That would be great

Variation map: Red circle.
Blue star: Textures used in the variation mix.
Green star: Hard edge slot.

After you select a variation map, everything will be painted for you , try to make some water and see how the sand on the beach is painted on the fly, also notice the grass in the editor/screenshot how it gives you variations.

If you already painted your level , it will NOT overrule this but use your own painted terrain. To get the procedural/variation effect you must then remove what you painted by using SHIFT while painting terrain.
best regards Preben Eriksen,
