Hi All,

We are looking to change the way we name our version numbers across all TGC main brands, and it carries some advantages for everyone and wanted to bounce the idea off this fine community. So far we've been creeping through the V1.X names, and often sidetracking to V1.XYZ builds when the need arose, but tracking the age and chronology of these versions have been all but impossible.

The new system would version updates by YEAR.MONTH.DAY where the date represents the intended release date of the update, and also act as a lasting reminder of how far back each update goes (should you choose to revert to early versions from the Steam beta panel). This would mean the next version would not be called V1.15 but GameGuru 2017.02.28 (for example).

The internal team are pretty happy with the new naming convention but wanted to get a devil's advocate perspective before we pull the trigger so to speak, and also post if you like the new versioning style too.

I'm indifferent to it personally but objectively, this seems to be more organized. I'd say go for it.

The Chinese say, it does not matter the color of the cat if it catches mices.

If this system is ok for team, for me as well.

Even better if that was the real next release date .

Sounds fine - I was going to say could you also mark the betas as it's difficult to keep track, log stuff per version without knowing, but looks like you already have

Cheers.

I'm indifferent to the naming convention used; it's your baby, name it what you want!

Perhaps put a "B" at the end to distinguish betas from releases?

Sounds like a better way to manage builds. I always think of using a similar system myself, but end up with odd names like game-latest and game-latest-NEW. Okay on the day but not really great next time you want to save a new version ;p

Thea render who I used to beta test for use
Quote: "Thea Version v1.5.08.1455 [22/12/16]"

the first part "v1.5" is the series "08" is updates, 1455 is the SDK its built against
The actual date only appears on the site, it doesn't seem to matter people still have the wrong versions, some are scary out of date, I was trying to help a guy do command line batch renders and he was using a version that had a birthday! and a bug he'd already mentioned and been fixed

As far as GG I loath Steam, I really wish there was an alternative download

Personally I think that's just making things even more complicated
All we need is the public release dated GameGuru 2017.02.28 (for example). And maybe the rollback version dated earlier.
The Beta is always named differently ...... plus it says beta on steam if your using it.

Okay, sounds like we have agreement, thanks all. Consider it implemented for the next version, and maybe you will get the next one on 2017.02.28

Hi Lee, just one thing; as some of us use the auto update on steam desktop which at times is always updating in the background. This means that sometimes if your busy with other things game guru will update before you have had the chance to make back-ups.
Would it be possible to have some kind of roadmap release date for the few who may not get the chance to back-up in time? Even if its between a few days due to on going little tweaks.
Dark Base 900 Pro OJ: Rampage V Ed.10, i7 6950x non-OC, DDR4-3333 64 GB RAM, Win 10/64, Asus Strix GeForce 1080 x 2 SLI mode, Water cooled with an old Victorian cast iron radiator and a industrial leather belt driven fan - That's what you call Steampunked.
