Ah! Wonderful! Greenlight was a cancerous desaster before. There needs to be at least some kind of quality control. This "power to the people" approach simply doesn't fly because developers tended to lie or people voted "ironically",unfortunately.

I'm certain this will improve the image of the indie scene in the long run!

Quote: ""This new path, which we’re calling 'Steam Direct,' is targeted for spring 2017 and will replace Steam Greenlight," Valve explains. "We will ask new developers to complete a set of digital paperwork, personal or company verification, and tax documents similar to the process of applying for a bank account. Once set up, developers will pay a recoupable application fee for each new title they wish to distribute, intended to decrease the noise in the submission pipeline." Part of the goal is to discourage the submission of Greenlight projects that are submitted in bad faith, such as joke-projects or projects comprised of stolen assets."

Nice!

Sounds like a good plan if those of use that have already paid get it free! Because from what I just read the money will no longer go to a charity, so yes they are making the system better but also lining their own pockets!
Intel i5 4950 Quad core 3.3ghz AMD FX 6300 x6 cores 3.5ghz(unclocked)
8gb Ram 8gb Ram
AMD Radeon 7570 1gb AMD Radeon HD 6670 2gb
and a well fed mouse on a wheel

I only smile because i have absolutely no idea whats going on

You will still have to pay, if you have already paid for greenlight and not had any games released then you will be refunded, if you have paid for greenlight and had a game released, then you will have to pay the new fee for each new game you want to release.

And if the prices are anything from $100 to $5000 then may not be able to afford to release a second game ...

Anything above 500$ would be painful... And a risk.

keep in mind folks, Valve have mentioned that the fee will be recoup able. Also, they haven't actually released a final statement, regarding the actual fee amount, as of yet.

Whatever their decision, I am glad to see the back of Greenlight.

If the fee is in the thousands, then, yeah, it will be tough, to get something on Steam, but, then, if you create a great game, you will make that back in no time. Plus, you can throw your game onto a free to upload site like itch.IO and generate the steam fee from those sales, therefore, the game has paid for itself.

There is always a way, you just need to be willing to put the work in. It doesn't have to break the bank.

Apparently, someone mentioned on the Steam discussion board that what they meant by recoupable was that if you didn't make it through the selection process you would get your money back, but if you got through, no matter how much or how little you made from it, you wouldn't get it back. It's still a huge risk.

It allways is and allways will be about the money in the end.this way they get the best of both worlds.if people are serious enough about there game they will find the money,it will stop the rubbish at least ( most of us will never publish a game and just enjoy the fun side of game creating )

Call me cynical but this probably means that you will see all submitted games using the new process go through, with the difference that Steam will line their own pockets with it this time around. There may be fewer but they can make that up with higher fees, all the same the ratio of crap games will remain a constant and they wont be throwing away money they can grab, no doubt quality will not be factor.

If the fee is anything above $500, expect a lot of Kickstarter campaigns to crop up.

$500 or even $1000 isn't an exorbitant amount of money for someone who is serious. It might succeed in limiting the amount of crap that gets through. Although I am not a serious game maker and don't expect to ever market one, in the event I changed my mind and decided to go for it, how much does Steam take from your Steam sales?
