can any of you talented guys help me with Gimp?

I have Gimp 2.8 I am trying to create my own textures for EBE I am having a problem creating normal, specular maps etc to be totally honest I don't know what export settings to use I have the DDS export option. was wondering if some one could do a step by step with a basic texture please.

as anyone ever heard of this https://www.pixplant.com/screenshots.php and would it be worth just getting it?

In Gimp for a normal map you need to install a normal map plugin

http://registry.gimp.org/node/69

For a specular map you need to take a copy of your normal map, then from the menu under colour, select desaturate to make it a grey scale, then from the menu under colour select levels, and adjust the black and white sliders, you can also adjust brightness and contrast from the colour menu to get it how you want it.

irp - done with PixPlant
ironrust - done with Paint.net

I have put them both in game and cannot see any difference accept neither of them are as shiny as I would like

If you want it shiny, you made it way too dark, the first rule for making a specular is "to make it brighter, make it whiter".

AwesomeBump is free

I'm using Gimp and it seems to work well, typically I use Shadermap Pro but Gimp is being just as good
