Limbs are the representation of the bone structure in a bone driven animated mesh.
With this in classic we where able to detect hit on any major part of the AI body and have a scripted and animated action to happen. Brought a sense of realism to the world when you shot one in the arm it reacts to the force and moves accordingly.
