Try the same thing with the soldiers and see what happens. The AI script for these characters are much simpler then the soldier ones.
Plus at there distance, You and the 2 objects between you and them are just one big blob. This should get better after the AI update.
You can also change the scripts and put in more states of what you want them to do. This really does come down to scripting to make most of the AI smarter.
