Product Chat / Standalone Game running with steam: strange gamma problem

Hey guys, it's me again...

I looked everywhere in the forums and could not find anything helpfull, so i gotta start a new thread once again...

I was running my game in steam yesterday and wanted to take some screenshots. (f12)
Now, when I pressed f12 the gamma value changed somehow... I can't undo that... I start a new game - the gamma stays that bright.
Loading won't help either. I added some screenshots below.

Also I noticed when pressing ( i believe it was f5 ) The health hud apears again, even though I disabled it via script..
What is that? Do you guys have any idea?

I can tell you the gamma problem is a steam overlay issue and has already been reported to Lee ..
You may want to email him on his progress investigating that one ...

Not sure whether the F5 is a GameGuru problem or a Steam shortcut key of any kind ?
The only person ever to get all his work done by "Friday" was Robinson Crusoe..

oh allright!
I checked other gameguru games like My Bones, and it did not have that problem!

I looked into this a few weeks back adding a non steam game to my account ( which is the same thing )
I found I could add just terrain and buildings and it would be fine .... But when I added a character it caused the issue ...
Whether its just characters I'm not sure ...
My Bones and fathers Island don't have characters .... This is what I sent to Lee ..

well that's interesting!
Will definitely try that! I don't have a "normal" character in, but I got the "mutant" from the asset store in it. Gonna remove him, he is only appearing in the distance for scaring the player...
Will post the result soon.

If continually uploading your game to test is awkward just add it as a non steam game to see if you have rectified it ..
That takes 30 seconds and will show if you have cured the fault ..

That's a weird one. I never use the F12 key I always use print screen key myself, so for screenshots is a simple way to grab some, although you do have to swap between GG and a paint package each time. Certainly an issue that needs sorting though, especially if your game is on Steam.

Alright, I deleted all characters and still... same error.

EDIT: my bad - I forgot one. will try again.

Your not the only one with this issue and I'm not the only one who mailed Lee on this so I don't know if he has progressed on fixing this ..
Try popping him an email see if he can help further .... I got nothing left

I tried a version without any characters, still the error appears. So it does not depend on characters.

But it does definitely seem to be related to either characters or maybe other "Dynamic" or animating objects ....
This is why it may be better rectified in the engine rather than you ruining your map ..

No idea how Steam works. Could you put up a test map so you can systematically add things to a blank level until you see the issue? That's what I would do. Start with a blank map and add in different components one at a time till you see the issue. Would probably be faster than altering your game and less likely for you to break anything.

Does not upload anything to steam, but out of curiosity, does f10 work as screenshot key, when game is on steam?

f12 takes the screenshot?

It looks like f12 working sometimes, but not always; others talking about f12 working just with full screen games, and so on.

It's not about the screenshots.
It's about the game being totally brightened up after accessing the steam overlay in any way, that includes pressing f12 to take screenshots..

I have been trying again for the last hour ...
So far it only seems to happen to me if I add something that shoots ....
Do you have anything on your map that shoots ?

He has statues using the angels script that attack, would that be the same?

No I don't have anything that shoots.
I have tried it with steam with another map. it's a wasteland style map, with a few enemies, a bunch of entities like barrels and a house and stuff. Really not that much. But the gamma error is happening there too...

I'm trying a blank map with just a building and light .... then adding things ... saving and save as standalone and its already added as a non steam game so I just keep running it .....

Any chance you could mail me your .fpm file ?
It will tell me all your objects in the log file ...see if I can see anything ..

Ok I didn't have everything in the map ( which made things easier )

This map contained soldiers and ammo .... I deleted them then tested it ...all was fine ....
I then simply added 1 box of ammo and the error was back ... as the video shows ...
For some reason its down to characters, Guns and ammo ...Zombies do not cause this problem ....
But even if you hold a gun the error occurs .. Sword characters also seem ok
Basically I have found the fault .... But only Lee can sort this one ... This is using Overlay " Shift + Tab "

oh great ! okay...

In my horror game I placed a crossbow, in the killer's house..
maybe that caused the problem. Thanks for testing! Will check it out now, and report later

I have emailed Lee with the link as a reminder...
I seem to be seeing more of these lately and greenlit users cant really release their games until its sorted ..
Unless it contains no weapons , ammo or characters that shoot ...
