Hey guys, currently I am trying to model a skateboard and I am in the unwrapping process.

But I am in a bit of a hangup with the base plates for the trucks:

I am able to get flat uv maps, but the problem is that I cannot for the life of me get rid of the overlapping faces without separating uv islands and creating too many seams (would make texturing the object much harder and look not as good)...

Anyone have any ideas for how to set up the seams? I am unwrapping in blender.

Thanks guys.

This is unfortunately a case for the lesser of two evils.

One approach would be to weld up the faces that are over lapping, apply a chequer texture to it and move some of the other verts around to minimise the distortion.

The other would be to detach the faces that are least likely to show a noticeable seem and just deal with it in photoshop which would probably the way I would tackle it.

hope that helps

Thanks frap, now that you mention it I think there will be areas that will not show some seams too noticeably so I think I will just detach them.

Is this in blender? If so there's a shortcut menu you can use to select a vertice on the unwrap and align it straight, I cant for the life of me remember which though. But to be honest you're going to at least put one more seam in there to cut no matter what you do, the vertical line just above where you have it highlighted, if you cut there you can have two groups and move them apart.

Yeah I used blender. I was actually able to unwrap it quite nicely, but I had to modify the angles on the geometry a little to make them less extreme. Here is the texture so far (work in progress):

I think I've become quite good at unwrapping since I started with 3d modeling, haha (used to use Lithunwrap... a dinosaur program from 2002 - did the job though). Takes a lot of work to get things right however. Not to toot my own horn.
