Is there a way to turn off the skybox light so that you start with nothing but your own placed light sources? I've been trying all sorts of settings but getting nowhere.

No not yet, You can change the color of the light, but even pure black does not seem to take it out completely.

Try bringing the ambient completely down and see if that gets it.

If this is an inside scene, I have put walls around my stuff that completely block the skybox light. Not to bad, but not the best.

unfortunately it's an outdoor scene in a sunless dimension...guess it's gonna have to contain a sun now. I'll work it in. Thanks for the reply.

If you bake the scene with static lights and then turn shadows slider down to '0' it should remove dynamic sunlight shadows and leave baked ones intact and still present. You can then adjust ambiance and surface levels to suit. Don't know if this helps
I have used this myself for indoor scenes where I didn't want dynamic entity's such as doors to cast shadows in odd directions, it should work just as well for any scene you don't want sunlight in.
