When is a community a community?
There are perhaps 20 or so users who post regularly on the forums, I suspect there may be a couple hundred who visit but never post much at all. The longer between updates the less posts are made, this is across all boards, you will see a surge when any new update is released. Activity is dependent on keeping interest and giving users something to work with. At the moment there is very little activity with GG as we all wait for something to happen but no idea what is going to change as far as media is concerned.....particularly with the a dx11 update. Bottom line the forums are crawling to a standstill.
As for free media it is nothing new for an artist to feel they are wasting their time when so few say thanks for anything they give away, after all, what else does the community have to give in return for any generosity. The script board seems to be very active with free scripts and advice, which is probably a swing towards those who code having an interest in software which is drag and drop media.I also notice on the scrIpts board that they don't accept requests and you wont get anything till you show you have at least tried yourself first.
I don't see why artists should step up and throw it out there for free and playing the 'community' card won't make it happen unless there is a community to be seen that actively supports those who do so. It also appears that many are finding it very difficult to get their models into GG which to be honest is no more difficult than it was to get it into FPSC.
Mostly free stuff will come from those newer to modeling and hobbyists as they learn their skills. Expecting high quality free media from artists who have spent years in it and continue to learn as they go is not really expected. We got a living to earn and modeling something decent takes a lot of skill.
Personally I used to give away a lot of free media but stopped after realising it was a thankless task and now only give out the occasional freebie, usually a prototype of something I just have an interest in creating. Maybe it will pick up around xmas for you with an influx of new users and new modelers who aren't as jaded as those of us around now
