For those that are new to Steam, the Steam Summer Sale will be starting soon (apparently the 11th of June, but we can't be certain until Valve make it official).
It usually lasts about 10 days, and you can get huge discounts (up to about 90%) on most of the games and software in the Steam library. There is a standard discount that applies to almost all of Steam's games (except recent releases) throughout the sale, and then there are daily deals and flash deals which offer even bigger discounts (including discounts on recent releases), for short periods. Standard procedure is to not buy anything at the standard discount until the last day of the sale (if you do, and it comes out on a daily or flash deal, you will swear).
If there is a particular game you're interested in, you can add it to your Steam wishlist, and you will be notified by e-mail if it's on special.

Apart from games, there's a good selection of game development/modelling software too.

The sale has now started, but I haven't had a good look at what's available, as the server is being overwhelmed. I did see that GTA V is 25% off, which is pretty good since it was only released a few months ago (on PC). I haven't been able to check any of the game creation tools, as the pages are not accessible to me yet.

You can get Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light redux for $10 (for both), but that's a daily deal - if you miss the first time there's a good chance that you can get it again on the last day of the sale where they have an encore sale.

Thanks, Gtox, and of course, this comes about on my payday. I often get carried away with these things when I have a little cash!

EDIT: Does anyone own ARK? Its early access, but looks quite good. Put it on my wishlist.

ARK looks quite good, but there seem to be dozens of early access survival games (several involving dinosaurs), and few seem to make it into a full product, so I'm not sure.

You get both for that price, but it's a daily deal, so get them in the next 40 minutes or wait until the last day encore sale, where they should be available again.
Edit - I see that the two Metro games are available on the same special for another 24 hours.

@HarryWever - I don't know if you've played any of the Far Cry games, but Far Cry 3 is available for $18-00, and Far Cry 4 is 40% off at $36-00. I haven't played Far Cry 4, but Far Cry 3 is excellent. These are standard specials, though, and will last until June 22, so if you want either of them you may as well wait to see if they come up on a daily deal or flash sale (I think there's a pretty good chance of this happening).

For RPG fans, Dark Souls is available for $6.79 (until June 22, so it may receive a further discount), and I would highly recommend it. Dark Souls II is also on special (at $24.99), but Dark Souls is the better game IMO.

Teabone - I see that there's an Origin sale as well (EA trying to compete with Valve), and while Origin has a fairly limited selection of games compared to Steam, there are some good deals there, too (50% off Dragon Age Inquisition, for example).

I've heard about this game - apparently quite depressing to play (I don't mean that in a bad way), with characters committing suicide when it all gets too much.

What steam sale :p. I have yet to look at the sales page.I got some great deals the previous 2 months on goodies I wanted, pretty happy to skip this sale and wait for the Halloween sale

I want GTA 5, but I am patient enough to wait till it comes down in price, still have to finish both GTA 4 and episodes from liberty city, actually picked up the whole collection on special last month.I think the only game I might shell out some cash for still is wolfenstein new blood, maybe the addons for alien isolation, it's a really awesome game.

I'm happy to wait another year or two for GTA V (I'm usually about 2 years behind when it comes to games - much cheaper that way). I've actually just bought Alien Isolation (waiting for it to download). It had some really bad reviews, and some very good ones, so I'm interested to see how it goes.

Well I am a good deal into the alien, it is awesome, the bad reviews were a result of people expecting a FPS fest, which it is not, this is survival horror done right. If your thinking about going commando and guns blazing you will be dead in no time flat. The graphics is awesome, and lots of designs ideas taken from the original aliens movies. There is times, where you can run around freely and there are times were you need to hide.

The atmosphere the game creates as you try to evade the alien, is done really well. Be prepared to jump a few times.

It does seem that the reviews were heavily influenced by whether or not the reviewer was expecting a survival/horror or an FPS fest. My decision to buy the game was based mostly on Jim Sterling's well balanced review, and the fact that I loved the first Alien movie (I actually love all of them, even the much maligned 3rd and 4th iterations), so I'm sure I'll enjoy Alien:Isolation.

i would say farcry 3 is worth it. and if you like 3 you will also like 4. great game(s). 4 is looking better and has better controlling and graphic settings, 3 has a much better story and a deeper atmosphere.

Ditto - I thought the behind the scenes stuff for Aliens was fascinating. Felt a bit sorry for the kid who played Newt's brother and was almost entirely cut out of the movie (except for a brief appearance at the beginning of the director's cut). To have a part in one of the all time great scifi movies and then be edited out must be soul-destroying.
Edit - also, James Cameron's frustration at the English staff and their lunch breaks, tea breaks and regular working hours. Pesky labour laws!

Bioshock is one of the great FPSs, and while it's fairly old, it's still wonderful to look at (and a fascinating plot). Bioshock 2 is good, but more of the same, and Bioshock Infinite is another great game - very strong story, and visually incredible.

@Gtox Not only are the deals amazing but you are also supporting some great charities in the process and you can gift the software/games you already own to others.
