Hello,

I was wondering if anybody knew of any third party programs (preferably free) that convert text to .ogg and/or .wav files? I have only been able to find ones with synthesized speech that sounds robotic and not even realistic. I know there has got to be one out there, because somehow the creators of GameGuru managed to get some files made for their games that came pre-packaged with GameGuru. So if somebody could assist me in finding one that would be great.

Thanks,
enick

P.S. I'm not interested in recording my own voice (I would not sound good in a video game)

Audacity is an amazing audio editing program. It lets you export any format as well. Its completely free. You will need to make an additional download though if you want to export MP3 format. Its all completely 100% free.

EDIT: My bad I misread your request :p

Because the text is converting to a database of audio of samples, you will never really get anything sounding completely realistic. Definitely not for free. I've heard a few that have come close but still have that very synthetic sound to it.

Thanks, I'll check it out, does it make realistic sounding voices as if somebody was actually talking to you? I am kind of wanting one where I can type text and have it converted to a voice for my game, and like I said above I'm not really looking for synthetic voices they sound to robotic for me.

I have used this one in the past http://www.naturalreaders.com/

But again might sound a bit too robotic for what your looking for. I now try to get voice actors (volunteers) to voice characters. I even do some myself. Its possible you could make a request on the forums for someone to read out your lines as a wav file for you? I've seen that on other game engine forums.

You can download FruityLoops demo for free.

Get it from here

You can work with the full suite and do everything you want with all the features. The only limitation is, you can't save your project. So, anything you do, needs to be exported to your chosen file type (ogg, wav, mp3 etc)

That has a pretty good voice synthesiser. You input text and it speaks it back to you.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Jay.

and if the voice synth is robotic use an audio editor to add distortion, radio hiss etc to disguise it a little.

I use soundforge, link below, its cheap, and will save any format and comes with audio fx, and you can add vst fx too, so limitless possibilties.
