I would like to know what scaling GG uses on the terrain textures, what's the ratio of repetition in inches? Since I know one grid square is 100 inches, how many times does the texture repeat in that?

Good question... You could probably use a terrain type with grid texture and compare to placed entities of known dimensions and the snap grid to check.

I just tried making floor tiles with the rock texture from "lush" and overlaying them on the lush rock texture in GG, but without much success... It would be really handy to know the scaling ratio. If anyone works it out please let me know. I tried various sizes.

The other thing that would be quite cool would be to be able to set the scale on the textures in the editor somewhere... I say this because some of my floor tiles I just made with the rock texture looked much higher in resolution than the blurry default rock. It looked much better. HD in graphics compared to standard definition almost.

I've only made one custom terrain so far, not really my thing, but I never worried by the size in game. I used 1024x1024 textures for each of the terrain floor types. You can probably go 2048x2048 but obviously it will slow things more and may be a little overkill. The main problem I found was getting them as featureless as possible to avoid the obvious tiling effect. Difficult with any grass like textures in my experience. When I used to use DB I would have several grass tiles that were seamless and slightly different so you could get a better looking floor, but obviously in GG it is not possible (That I know of).

Well I tried increasing the resolution by multiplying the rock texture multiple times. I got up to 8192x8192 where it looked quite good, but for some reason there was strange blackness... see screenshots. Rocky_D.dds and Rocky_N.dss now weigh in at 512mb combined. lol surely there must be a way of scaling the textures in GG rather than multiplying the textures to stupid sized files in GIMP before. At the very least I would like to know the answer to my main question because I can't for the life of me work it out.... It would help tremendously with my 3D modelling.

Also why do the .dds files of the other textures look black in gimp? Rock is the only texture that is extractable visually.
