Hello,

I bought a new skybox at the GameGuru store and look forward, to set it up for a Game?
How do I do that?
Might someone have a hint for me?

Just press tab twice in a test game and select it from the skybox panel.

I would like to know how to create my own skybox. Is there a tutorial somewhere?

go to the skybank folder, duplicate one of the folders, change the graphics in the folder, erase the superterrain file, so it is generated again, run test game in GG and go to the metrics (tab tab) choose your sky, and see where it needs to be adjusted.

Just been playing making a custom Skybox, but all I get is black. I think you must be thinking of custom terrain's there Myke I have replaced each of the default images with 1024x1024 dds files but see nothing in game but a black sky and a bit of a glow where the sun should be. I also renamed the .x file to the same as the images and left the skyspec alone for now. I seem to be missing something here though as black is as good as it seems to get.

eg.
snow_U.dds etc.
snow.x

Anyone have ideas as why this is the case?

I think when I did it I had to make sure the texture names were referenced correctly inside the .x file, so snow_U.dds (and the other 5) are listed within the .x schema ... e.g. TextureFilename { "snow_U.dds"; .... within .x

Cheers.

Yes the superterrain thing is wrong, sorry late night.

They skybox being black I have seen this when I tried it the first time. I used dds with the DXT1 option and it seems to work for me. Have 3 custom ones now.

Make sure the is no alpha channel in those images. I think that was it. was about a month ago I was messing with these.

@ cybernescence that has worked, makes sense really, I wasn't sure if GG actually set up the x file itself or not. Obviously not, lol.
@ Pirate Myke, Alphas don't seem to make a difference with or without, or at least I haven't spotted anything yet.

I do however have an issue with it still. I guessed the images needed in place of the originals and it seems I have guessed correcly as the images all seem to be in the right place. However the entire image looks like a normal map...

I'm fairly certain that I saved them all as diffuse, but as I generally have to use mindtex for saving dds files, it can sometimes do odd things when saving over files. I will have to double check them if I can, Gimp seems to refuse to display them and also the original images although I have the plugin for dds textures enabled.

Hopefully have it sussed now though thanks for the help everyone!

Thanks, I have got it working now so no need, but thanks for the offer. It was Mindtex doing it's usual thing and saving as a normal map. I ended up using Gimp, although I couldn't see an image, exporting it still worked. I had a few issues with one face not lining up for some odd reason but after swapping 2 files over and then back again it now all works... No idea why that would work, but it seems to have.

The only thing I have left to do is to position the sun correctly. I'm not sure how that works as yet, so any suggestions would be good. Unlike the ones in GG it is directly overhead, so I am unsure if I can even alter it to that position. Does it work with world co-ords or local ones on a specific image?

Not so sure if there is any other way but trial and error. I messed with the sun position, and I see that they all start from this in the skyspec.txt file. SunDirection = 100,100,100 . managed to make the shadow appear correctly. I turned up the lightrays, so I could see them after each setting I tried.

Thinking that it is in relation to the map scene.

Sounds like it must use a percentage system possibly. Been scripting, so not looked yet, but will have a play later today. Thanks!

I will see if I can find out, Looks like 256 might be the upper limit as 100 is only about 45 degrees in the air.

OK. I'm a total newbie at Skyboxes but, as I keep telling my mother (much to her annoyance), in ten years' time I will be a world renowned games developer (take that with a dose of salt). Like every other developer I strive for the unique, so I would love to make a skybox. Could someone please make a tutorial?

Thanks.

I've managed to do it in the past without issues at all. Very similar to when creating your own paint textures, only you need the X file present in your new skybox folder.

One thing I haven't been able to get working is a custom shaped skybox like a skydome or larger skybox.

Just duplicate one of the already existing skybank folders. From there past your own skybox texture on each DDS file. I'm not sure however if it will still work if you change the textures name, since I believe the X file is reference it. I haven't done this since Game Guru was Reloaded.

Use skyspec.txt in your newly duplicated folder, to alter the sun positioning and cloud movements - if need be.

Hopefully GameGuru will be able to create many genre's of games by then and have mobile porting capabilities

I will never give up the power of my desktop for a phone or laptop, not until they have some real power in them.

They never will ...You need some kind of PC or computer to design the next generation mobile phone or pads.....same with console games really pretty much anything for everything needs some kind of powerful PC to design it in the first place
