Yes, they were in the early versions, but were not implemented. They have been removed while being redeveloped, as not to confuse the user with extra, stuff that does not function at the moment.
You can add you own text to the screen, you can fabricate your own HUDs for displays.
In the script thread, there is a sticky with the LUA commands that are attached to the engine. You have all these, Plus the functions in the LUA libraries, that are part of LUA. The complete list of the base LUA functions can be found on the wiki page or Google it. Have a sandwich, some coffee, and a note pad. Tons of information.
Check the script board for examples on both of these and see what can be done.
In the docs folder there are 3 pdf files with some very interesting information's that will help with more basics, and directions, for setting up special background sounds and 3d sound stuff.
