I'm developing some games for the Wii U console and will be posting updates here if anyone is interested. Pre-production is underway on 2 games to be published in the Fall of 2015. I am using Unity for both games. I'm also investigating a few smaller games that I might develop on Construct 2.

The first game in development is a pirate-themed First Person 3D story/adventure game that takes place in the early 18th century.

The second game in development is a 2.5D multiplayer co-op super hero game.

So, does anyone here have a Wii U? Thoughts?

Wow, no one has a Wii U here? Well, I highly recommend it. It's fast becoming the best gaming console I've ever owned. That honor was previously held by my Nintendo 64. Yep, I'm a Nintendo fan boy. But to be fair, I own and still have all of the following:

Atari 7800, Atari Jaguar, Colecovision Adam, NES, Super NES, Genesis, PS1, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, Gamecube, N64.

Here is my first progress report. I received my Wii U dev kit on Friday and had it up and running with a demo game on Sunday morning. Since then I've successfully created a test game to display a 3D scene on the TV and a separate GUI concurrently on the Gamepad. I've started experimenting with a title screen and transitions from one scene to another. So far progress has been good.

My next step is to get my FPS controls working with the Wii U Gamepad. And while doing rudimentary Wii U game tests, I've been writing the complete design document for the first game. There are going to be a lot of technical challenges with this first title, but I'm confident I can find solutions to them all.

I ended up working on physics last evening. I started intensive training on the Unity Physics system and learned a few important things so far. I still have a lot more to learn, but it'll be very important to my game development pipeline. I plan to have a lot of physics interactions in my 3D game.

I sought technical support on getting a decent FPS control on the Gamepad, but haven't received any help in that area yet. If I have any brainstorms, I'll give them a try. In the meantime, I'll continue to look at physics.

I don't have a Wii U but I will follow your progress just out of curiosity! During this lull in Reloaded I've been looking around at other things. I subscribed to UE4 the other day and have been "playing" with that. I have also been building a MAME cabinet over the past few years. It is not a standard MAME cabinet by any means. I've a ways to go on it, but one thing I realized since Reloaded came about was that first person shooters don't work well with standard arcade controls. Since my cabinet is going to be an all-in-one machine, a gamepad (Xbox controller) will be incorporated, so that is a possibility for me as well. I know there is a utility out there somewhere for about $10 that will allow gamepad buttons to emulate any standard PC keys (I know this has nothing to do with your project, sorry, I'm just digressing!), I just can't remember what it's called! Anyway, good luck!

I've been making steady progress on my 3D pirate-themed game. It's going a bit slower than I'd like because I'm still learning the Unity engine, but I'm not too far from having some actual gameplay in the first game area. I don't have screenshots to show yet, but will post some here as soon as I do.

I didn't make much progress over the past week. I've been struggling with physics coding for Unity. I've been learning from tutorials and experimentation, but things were just not working as I expected. I finally figured out the reason for my issues and can finally move on. I learned quite a bit in the process and feel positive about the next steps.

I successfully got the UFPS plugin working on Wii U this afternoon. If you are not familiar with it, UFPS is Ultimate FPS with some great tools for creating first person shooter games. My game Voyage of the Sea Dragon is using FPS elements although it's not strictly a shooter per se.

I just secured another 30% of the assets needed to build Voyage of the Sea Dragon. I'm going to be having fun this weekend really getting some game play into the game. I've learned a lot about the Unity Occlusion Culling system and have been tweaking the first game level to take advantage of it so that I can consistently get 60 fps on target hardware. I still have tweaks to be made, but it's looking promising.

I now have the picking up/dropping/throwing system in place. And I have a prototype of a torch that can be picked up and carried around as a light source. Right now it's just using the mace weapon as the torch base, but the lighting and particle effect are working nicely. I'll be replacing the torch particle effect with something more convincing and the mace will be a proper 3D model at some point. I still have a lot to learn about Unity and the UFPS plugin, but progress is positive and I'm getting closer to a level of comfort with the engine.

I could whip up screenshots pretty easily at this point, but I'm not to the point where I want to show anything off yet. The game area is still a long ways from being fleshed out properly and all the important details are still missing. Anything shown now would just be far less than what I want to reveal. Maybe by the end of the month though I might have some shots to show.

I've now add the PlayMaker plugin to my Unity game development process. So, at the core of my Unity Wii U game development aside from Unity itself, I am using the following:

Ultimate FPS
NGUI - Next Gen UI
PlayMaker
Locomotion

With these plugins, game development is really taking off. Unity 5.0 should be coming to Wii U in a few months as well so things are looking very bright indeed.

The big news of the day is that I'm developing a 3rd title for the Wii U that is priority #1 and set for release around May/June 2015, just in time for the big E3 show in Los Angeles. The new title is a space themed shoot 'em up with a few innovations. The title is in the prototyping phase right now and coming along nicely. As soon as I have an approved music track, I'll post a video of the prototype in action.

Looks like I'm the only one here with a Wii U! Your game looks great so far mate. I've bought loads of indie games so far for the Wii U and they've all been good. Am looking forward to seeing more of your stuff. Bear in mind that the 'sweet spot' for a great deal of people buying indie games is under a tenner, the cheaper the better although not too cheap because people won't see value in the game if it's only a couple of quid. I'd suggest something like £5.99-7.99 would be ideal as long as there's plenty of content or replayability. Best of luck, looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!

Well, I caved in and bought a Wii-U this Black Friday (a bundle w/ Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong Tropical, Mario 3D World and Nintendo Land). It will be next weekend before I can hook it up if not a bit longer as I'm also getting a bigger TV, but I know nothing about the indie scene on it. Will catch up with this thread once I'm all settled in with it This is my first next-gen console, will be a good year before I get the others I think. I bought a 3DS XL this weekend too lol.

Our 3rd title in development is called Frontier Guard.

Become an ace fighter pilot in futuristic earth's space defense force, defending the frontiers against the evil forces of Evo.

I'm past the basic prototyping stage and am now developing the first full level. Progress has been good so far and things are shaping up. I've put in some temporary free to use music tracks so it won't be long before I can show off some early screenshots and a video.

The details of this project have been submitted to and accepted by Nintendo and release is tentative for June 2015.

I've been hard at work on Frontier Guard, our first Wii U game title, over the holiday season and the game is really shaping up. I have most of the first 2 levels done except for some more detailed game play mechanics and polishing. I am planning to put together a video of sample game play action sometime this week. And I'll definitely have some updated screenshots as well.

No. I think there are only a couple if that many.

Woah! I haven't checked this thread because I thought it was just people talking about games on the wii u, not people making games for it.

Your pirate game looks really cool! There are too fiew pirate themed or any games set in this time period.

However, I'm skeptical about you producing multiple games at once. Why don't you focus on one title at a time?

In essence, we are. I started some prototyping on Voyage of the Sea Dragon as it was going to be the "only" game we were developing, but then I realized that I needed more Unity experience and more time and man-power for the game so I went with our second idea Super Fam. I quickly realized that I needed to change strategies and get a product out the door by June and the E3 show so that I could start making a profit and pay for the Nintendo dev kit so that's when Frontier Guard was born. It is a game that can be done in a short timeline.

Essentially, only Frontier Guard is being worked on with the exception of artwork for Super Fam, which is being done independent from the resources needed to complete Frontier Guard. Once Frontier Guard is complete then Super Fam will go into full production and then Voyage of the Sea Dragon after that. Of course, things could change if profits are big for the first game and we can bring more people on to spearhead the other games independently.

That sounds reasonable! I wish you and your team best luck with Frontier Guard! Old school shoot'em ups usually bring in a little funding if developed for the right system and I hope yours does aswell.

I've uploaded an early look at Frontier Guard to IndieDB.com. Unfortunately, my video capture card is not that good and can only capture at a somewhat low-quality 720p 30fps format. I also didn't have the ability to capture the sound and so I just added a generic sound track for the video. Hopefully, I can find myself an inexpensive 1080p capture solution for future videos.

Hi ! I have a WiiU since the beginning and i love it.
I always wanted to work on it and have access to the dev kit but i'm alone, have no skills in Unity...
I decided to be wise and be quiet.
Export a FPSCreator game on Wii U could be funny...

Unity is great, but it definitely takes a fair amount of effort to get up to speed. I'm very comfortable with it now, but I still have a lot to learn in certain areas. Training on 3DBuzz.com was great at getting me through the basics and getting mt feet wet. They have a lot of free training material there for Unity.
