Using Tab is definitely the best way of doing it even though you have to get close because if there is not a lot of room between the roof and the floor you don't get to see a lot of the floor space by zooming in. Using the tab means that you see a lot more floor space to enable you to place your items.
Of course if there is plenty of room between the roof and the floor them Zoom away.
